Luxury SUVs with impressive fuel efficiency

The main reason small SUVs are so popular is that they offer great fuel efficiency – but what if we told you luxury SUVs can also be very fuel-efficient?

From trusty hybrids to petrols and diesels, these 10 SUVs offer endless comfort and better MPG figures.

Lexus RX350h

If you fancy a break from the usual luxury German SUVs, then the Lexus RX350h from Japan is a great alternative.

Not only does it look sharp, but it’s also got one of the best interiors in its segment.

Inside, you get the option of leather throughout, a panoramic sunroof and a large 14-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

But as well as being a pleasant place to be, this Lexus SUV is also very fuel-efficient, offering 42mpg from its 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid (PHEV) engine setup.

Thanks to its large 18.1kWh battery, you get up to 40 miles of electric-only driving, which is perfect for city-dwellers.

Audi Q3

Having a cheap-to-run SUV is the dream, isn’t it? Well, the Audi Q3 is just that.

Audi has always been good at designing and building top-end interiors, and the Q3 crossover SUV is no exception.

It features a clean and well-laid-out interior with sat-nav and Bluetooth smartphone connectivity.

As for driving, a used Audi Q3 returns up to 44.8mpg with the petrol, 56.5mpg with the diesel, and all the way up to 176.6mpg with the top-spec plug-in hybrid.

Jaguar F-Pace

Jaguar F-Pace P400e

Traditionally, Jaguar owners were a man of a certain age who had done well for themselves and decided it was time to own a Jag, but now it’s very different.

Sure, you still get those folk, but all Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) cars now appeal to a much wider breadth of people – and this one will even please your wallet.

If you’ve ever sat in a Land Rover or Jaguar, you’ll know they are built exceptionally well, with plush leathers everywhere, heated and cooled seats, adaptive cruise control and many more gadgets.

Aside from all this, the F-Pace is also economical, getting up to 176.2mpg with the PHEV, 46.8mpg with the diesel, and 30.7mpg with the petrol.

Audi Q2

While the larger Q3 may be the more popular small Audi SUV option, the Audi Q2 is easier to drive and park because it’s that bit smaller – great for new drivers who are after a luxurious and efficient car.

One of its interior highlights is the Q2’s virtual cockpit, which is an Audi staple feature allowing you to display your music or maps along with the dials in front of you while you drive.

The most popular engine is the 1.5-litre petrol engine that’s capable of 46.3mpg, but if you want that little bit more efficiency then the diesel variant offers up to 65mpg.

Mercedes-Benz GLE

Need lots of space but don’t want to cramp your style with an MPV? The Mercedes-Benz GLE is one of the best options out there if you need seven seats and immense levels of comfort.

Its hefty twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine may not be the most efficient option out there, but there’s also a range of economical plug-in hybrid petrol and diesel engines that’ll get you 282.5mpg and 353.1mpg respectively.

What makes the Mercedes GLE stand out from the crowd is its interior, which comes with two MBUX infotainment touchscreens that span the dash, giving you and all your passengers a great experience.

Volvo XC90

For many years, the Range Rover has been sat at the top of the luxury SUV chain, but there’s one model that’s been rivalling it throughout – the Volvo XC90.

Not only has it got one of the most comfortable and plush interiors in the game, the Volvo XC90 also comes with high safety ratings and lots of great tech.

Fuel economy is strong in all models too, with the petrol getting up to 33.6mpg, the diesel offering up to 44.1mpg, and the top-spec PHEV with up to 235.1mpg.

Honda CR-V

The first thing that springs to mind when we think of a used Honda is strong reliability, great affordability, and superb build quality.

The one factor many forget, however, is the luxury aspect, which has grown drastically in recent years – especially in its CR-V SUV.

Its interior may not directly rival the likes of the Bentley Bentayga or Rolls-Royce Cullinan, but it’s very good for the price.

You get soft-touch materials throughout, a solid infotainment system, and well-placed buttons to control the A/C and heating etc.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the CR-V gets up to 38.7mpg from its petrol engine and up to 42.8mpg from its self-charging hybrid motor.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

With the recent arrival of the all-new Tonale that’s hard to get a hold of, buyers are turning their heads towards the Alfa Romeo Stelvio – an existing luxury Alfa Romeo SUV.

This mid-sized SUV offers up some strong engine options, classic Italian automotive luxury and hatchback-like driving capabilities, but with increased practicality.

As for economy, the Stelvio can be had with either a petrol or diesel engine, offering up to 34.9mpg and 48.7mpg respectively.

BMW X5

If you want a sportier luxury SUV experience, then the BMW X5 is the car to have.

It takes inspiration from the smaller X1 and various M Sport models by offering sporty suspension, powerful engines and great looks.

One of the best features of this BMW's interior that’s rarely talked about is how many buttons there are.

There’s nothing more annoying than fiddling around with a touchscreen while trying to drive, so these physical buttons eliminate this.

Fuel economy is strong too, with its petrol engine returning up to 31.4mpg, the diesel seeing up to 42.2mpg, and the top-spec PHEV offering up to a staggering 353.1mpg.

Volvo XC60 Recharge

The XC60 Recharge is Volvo’s mid-range hybrid SUV, and it’s the pick of the bunch for most people because it isn’t as large as the full-fat XC90, but it’s got more space and practicality than the smaller XC40.

Inside, it’s like every other Volvo, with a portrait display in the centre of the dash, an overall minimalist look and comfortable leather seats that are ideal for those longer motorway journeys.

It’s also one of the best luxury SUVs for fuel efficiency, with the petrol offering up to 38.6mpg, the diesel offering up to 47.9mpg, and the top-spec PHEV giving you up to 282.1mpg.
