GLE
The Mercedes-Benz GLE is one of its most popular SUV models because it offers incredible levels of luxury, comfort and durability.
It was first introduced in 2015 when the SUV market was starting to thrive, and since then has become Mercedes’ best-selling SUV model.
The SUV market today is so overcrowded, but we think the GLE hits the sweet spot because it offers very similar luxury to the more expensive GLS but at a more approachable price point.
Its main rivals are the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery and Volvo XC90 – all very large SUVs but somehow without the same presence as the imposing GLE.
One stand-out feature worth mentioning is that the GLE is available with either five or seven seats, making it more practical and better for larger families.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE sees most of its success thanks to the class-leading interior quality.
All newer models feature a 12.3-inch infotainment system in the centre and a 12.3-inch cockpit display directly under the driver’s nose to replace the analogue dials, because they’re just too old-fashioned in the eyes of Mercedes.
The whole system is run by the latest MBUX infotainment system that's now standard across the range, and offers a seamless experience with the option to hook up your smartphone using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
There are also a few trims on offer – the AMG Line model gets 20-inch alloys, plus 4MATIC all-wheel drive and Nappa leather interior.
There's also the GLE Night Edition for adding sporty and striking extras like black design features.
You can see the full range of features in each model by taking a look at our current used Mercedes-Benz GLE listings.
There are loads of engine options available with the GLE, including a range of diesels, petrol engines and a hybrid variant.
Starting with the three diesel engines, the GLE offers the 300d, 350d and 400d. The entry-level 300d is powered by a 245hp 2.0-litre engine, the 272hp 350d 3.0-litre six-cylinder, and the 400d has the same engine but produces 330hp.
These diesel engines are perfect if you want to carry more people, tow anything, or commute long distances on motorways because they'll return greater fuel economy.
However, if you do more city driving or cruising around town, then we would suggest checking out the GLE450 petrol engine that's supported by a mild-hybrid system to give it extra poke at lower speeds, and allows it to become kinder to the environment in traffic.
Alternatively, if you fancy something to rival the likes of the BMW X5M or Audi RSQ8 then we would recommend the GLE 53 or 63 models powered by a monstrous 430hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine or 600hp 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo respectively.

Thanks to Mercedes’ strong reliability over the years, you shouldn’t have any worries about the GLE. As a brand, it ranks highly among recognised consumer surveys.
We'd say the GLE would make a very solid family car for someone who's perhaps considering a Range Rover but wants something a little different and arguably more luxurious. It's also available with up to seven seats, which is a bonus.
The GLE and GLC are both great. The GLE is larger than the GLC and can come with more seats and has a larger boot, so it really depends what you’re looking for.
Some GLE models have seven seats, but not all.
