Start nowThe Mercedes GLE is one of the German manufacturer’s most popular SUV models because it offers incredible levels of luxury, comfort and durability, yet used Mercedes GLE cars can be surprisingly affordable.
The GLE name first came about in 2015, as the SUV market really started to thrive, but the same model was branded M-Class before this, and traces its roots back to 1997.
One stand-out feature worth mentioning is that the GLE is available with either five or seven seats, making it more practical and better for larger families.
Popular Mercedes GLE trims
Most of the trim levels available on the GLE are pretty high-spec, so there’s really no bad pick.
> Mercedes GLE AMG Line - Sporty-looking model with lots of standard equipment
> Mercedes GLE AMG Line Premium - Even more equipment as part of the upgraded package
> Mercedes GLE AMG Line Premium Plus - Range-topping model this side of the fast AMG versions

Mercedes GLE history
Originally launched as the M-Class in 1997, this model was re-badged GLE as part of a 2015 facelift to the 2011-onward third-generation W166 model.
> Third-generation W166 Mercedes GLE (2015) - Imposing and slightly boxy design
> Fourth-generation W167 Mercedes GLE (2019) - Curvier design, more luxury and new engines
> Facelifted Mercedes W167 GLE (2023) - Styling changes and more efficient engine options
The latest-generation models introduced in 2019 feature a multi-display setup with two large 12.3-inch displays – a digital instrument cluster and an impressive touchscreen infotainment system, which works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Standard kit is impressive, with newer cars getting LED headlights, a reversing camera, a panoramic sunroof cruise control, heated seats, parking sensors and keyless entry.
As well as some Premium packages, watch out for models with the Night Edition upgrade, which adds even more style.
Mercedes is known for building extremely durable and long-lasting components, and being such an important model for the brand, a used Mercedes GLE is expected to come with even more assurance.
If running costs are important to you, avoid the GLE 63 S, which can do 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, and instead aim for one of the diesels, which are pretty averagely economical for this size car.
If you have access to a home charging point, the plug-in hybrids are worth considering, especially because you can pick diesel hybrids, which really suit this model.
Think of this car more as a five-seater that’s an excellent SUV for the family, but one that offers intense levels of luxury. Get a seven-seater model and you’ll be able to ferry around your kids’ friends occasionally, too.
Other large SUVs with up to seven seats include the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport.
The GLE SUV and coupé share similar features, but the coupé has a sleeker, sloping roofline for a sportier look.
The SUV provides more rear-seat headroom and boot space with 630 litres, while the coupé prioritises a distinctive design with slightly compromised practicality.
The E-Active Body Control in the GLE optimises driving dynamics by individually controlling suspension at each wheel.
It improves ride comfort, stability and off-road capabilities, providing an advanced and adaptive driving experience tailored to various road conditions.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE's MBUX system features a responsive touchscreen, voice control and an augmented reality sat-nav.
With intuitive controls and advanced connectivity, it provides a cutting-edge and user-friendly infotainment experience for the driver and passengers.
The GLE's Advanced Driving Assistance includes features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking.
These technologies support drivers by enhancing safety, maintaining proper spacing and providing assistance in emergencies.
The GLE offers various engine options, including turbocharged six-cylinder and eight-cylinder options, as well as plug-in hybrid variants.
These engines provide a range of power and efficiency choices, catering to diverse preferences within the GLE lineup.
