BMW launched the first-generation E84 model in 2009, and it looked more like a raised estate, but the two generations that followed adopted a more SUV-like design.

What features does the BMW X1 have?

Facelifted second-gen models are very well-equipped, coming with things like dual-zone air-con, push-button start, cruise control, all-round parking sensors and LED headlights as standard.

The 8.8-inch touchscreen uses the slick iDrive operating system and works with Bluetooth and DAB. You get Apple CarPlay connectivity, but no Android Auto.

The third-generation car gets heated front seats, a reversing camera and a 10.7-inch infotainment display as standard – this time with added Android Auto support.

Is the BMW X1 reliable?

BMWs are known to be generally reliable, and the X1 shares a platform and mechanical parts with the MINI Countryman, BMW X2 and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, which helps prove its track record.

The brand tends to perform above average, especially compared with other luxury brands, but replacement parts can be on the pricier side.

How much does the BMW X1 cost to run?

Fuel costs for the BMW X1 can be pretty reasonable – the diesel models should be able to beat 40mpg, with petrol models not too far behind, even with the four-wheel-drive xDrive system.

Insurance can be slightly higher than average, but that might be countered by attractive PCP finance deals. Other running costs like maintenance and tyres could be slightly above average, too.
