BMW X1 SE buying guide

What is the BMW X1 SE?

SE was a trim level that BMW used for many years to denote its most affordable options, but in the case of the X1, it was removed in early 2022 leaving buyers having to fork out more for mid-spec Sport models.

BMW relies a lot on selling optional extras, so the SE doesn’t actually come with much less than a Sport model, making it excellent value.

Don’t be put off by those extras, though, because even the most basic BMW X1 SE comes with all the essentials.

What are the BMW X1 SE specs?

Most buyers will end up going for one of the versatile and efficient diesels, either the 18d or the 20d. Both are 2.0-litre units, and they produce 150hp and 190hp respectively.

There’s also a 2.0-litre petrol, badged 20i, which produces 178hp, and a smaller 136hp 1.5-litre petrol, badged 18i.

Many models are front-wheel drive, and you’ll tell these apart by their sDrive badging. For the higher-output engines, you can also get xDrive four-wheel drive models.

Used BMW X1 SE features and equipment

Standard kit varies depending on model year, so it’s worth checking any individual listing to make sure you’re getting what you want.

As a guide, most newer cars come with dual-zone climate control, cruise control, LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors and a great infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay.

Some optional extras worth looking out for include a head-up display, an upgraded sound system, a panoramic glass sunroof, heated seats, a heated steering wheel and keyless entry.

Where the X1 SE sits in the BMW range

The SE was sold as the entry point to X1 ownership up until 2022 when the mid-spec Sport model became the cheapest new option.

You can also pick from high-spec xLine models for a rugged look, or M Sport models for a sportier vibe.

There’s also a plug-in hybrid option available for higher-spec trim levels, and it comes with a few extra hybrid-related bits of kit.
