History of BMW

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) was founded in 1916 and originally made aircraft engines before producing its first motorcycle in 1923 and then its first car – the BMW 3/15 – in 1928. 

Following its success, the BMW Group went on to buy several other companies to sit under its umbrella – Mini was purchased in 1996 and Rolls-Royce followed in 1998. 

The BMW logo was originally a horse’s head, but this quickly changed to the blue and white design we know today, which has been refreshed six times. It’s a common misconception that its logo symbolises a plane’s propellor, but it actually represents the state colours of its home: the State of Bavaria in Germany.

All modern used BMWs come packed with the latest and greatest features, from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to heated seats and a large panoramic sunroof.  

They all run the same BMW iDrive infotainment system, which is easy to use and features crisp graphics. It’s hard to beat, especially the large central displays that sit proudly on the dashboard to run the software. 

Accompanying this is the car’s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) that includes features such as lane departure warning, blind spot detection and automatic emergency braking. This all helps towards strong overall Euro NCAP safety test scores.

Used BMWs are great fun to drive, and a lot of this is down to the engines under the bonnets, but another way the Bavarian car brand excels is in steering feel. Even if you’re not interested in how a car feels on the ragged edge, however, they’re great for city driving or longer motorway stints. 

Running costs should also be relatively low. We’re not saying BMWs are cheap to run – they are classed as luxury cars, after all – but in comparison to many cars, they're reasonable.  

The electric versions are going to have the lowest running costs because they have fewer moving parts that can go wrong, but even the petrol, hybrids and diesel BMWs for sale make solid daily drivers.

Popular used BMW cars

Two of the most popular used BMWs to buy are the BMW 3 Series saloon (or estate) and BMW X5 SUV because they’re well-built cars that can be driven all day up and down the country.  

There are also some great electric options available, notably the i3 and iX, which offer excellent electric ranges of up to 380 miles and all the interior tech you could possibly want.  

If you want a smaller hatchback then the 1 Series or 2 Series would make a great option. Plus, you can even have the latter as a saloon, if you prefer. 

You’re best off buying a used BMW if you appreciate the finer things in life and have a little more budget to blow.  

Having said that, you get a lot for your money when comparing them to rivals.
