BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe history
The Gran Coupe has been out since the 4 Series’ first generation launched in 2013.
It offers a four-door ‘liftback’ style that makes it more practical than the standard two-door coupe or convertible.
> BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe first generation (2013-2019)
> BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe second generation (2020-present)
A used BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is packed full of all the features you’d expect to find in a standard two-door 4 Series.
As well as the usual Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the 4 Series Gran Coupe also gets a head-up display, voice command system and a large 10.3-inch infotainment screen.
Its main party trick over the standard 4 Series is the increased space. It has proper rear seats and a 470-litre boot – 30 litres more than the standard two-door car.
Being stylish and practical doesn’t guarantee reliability. But, in the case of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, it does.
Sharing most parts with the standard 4 Series, the Gran Coupe is a dependable car that won’t let you down on a family road trip or commute to work .
That’s thanks to the range of solid engines and great German build quality that we’ve come to expect from BMW.
Plus, it’s safe too, scoring a full five stars following its most recent Euro NCAP safety test.
Powering a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe for sale is either a 2.0-litre four-cylinder or 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with diesels on offer, too.
The diesel is the most frugal unit, and while the petrols aren’t as good on fuel, BMW has made sure they’re as economical as can be.
The 2.0-litre has a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 46.3mpg, whereas the larger 3.0-litre claims 36.2mpg – either way, they’re far better than the thirsty M4.
If you want proper fuel economy then a diesel version is your best bet, offering up to 56mpg.
You should consider a used BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe if you like the look of the 4 Series but it’s just not practical enough for you.
The added boot space and spacious rear seats mean you get 3 Series-like practicality without compromising on styling.
Because it’s based on the 4 Series, the Gran Coupe is a very fast car with a (limited) top speed of 155mph, not that you should be attempting this any place outside the Autobahn.
The main difference is size. The Gran Coupe is larger with four doors and a bigger boot.
Very reliable. With a great selection of dependable engines and proper German build quality, it’s hard not to recommend one.
Yes, but only just. What you do get is sleeker styling compared to the 3 Series.
This depends on what you’re after. Want performance? Get the M4. Want space? Get the Gran Coupe. Want a sleek convertible? Get the 4 Series convertible.
