Start nowThe Audi A5 was born out of the discontinued Audi A4 Cabriolet – when it went on sale, there were convertible, coupé and five-door Sportback versions to pick from.
A second generation came about with revised styling and considerable tech improvements, but the same three options were there.
In 2024, Audi announced that the two A4 models – saloon and Avant – would become the A5, in order for the company to reserve the even numbers for its EVs, i.e. A4 and A6.
Popular Audi A5 trims
Regardless of model year, the same trim levels are generally available across the board, so it’s easy to understand which cars offer more features.
> Audi A5 SE - this entry-level car comes with cruise control, all-round parking sensors, keyless go and a dual-display setup on the dashboard
> Audi A5 Sport - popular car with larger alloys, more aggressive styling and electrically adjustable seats
> Audi A5 S line - popular range-topper with firmer suspension, LED headlights and an even sportier body kit
Audi A5 history
The Audi A5 was introduced in 2007, so it’s a fairly new model, but it’s based on the A4 and shares many parts with its sibling, so it has a much longer history in reality.
> Second-generation Audi A5 (2017) - sharp styling, modern interior and luxurious cabin, there’s an A5, S5 or RS5 to suit every driver
> Facelifted Audi A5 (2020) - usual update including styling enhancements, more tech and mild hybrid engines
> Third-generation Audi A5 (2024) - replacing the A5 Coupé, A5 Cabriolet and A5 Sportback with new Saloon and Avant models, previously known as the A4
Standard equipment on a facelifted second-generation Audi A5 includes parking sensors and a reversing camera, LED headlights and a touchscreen infotainment system with a digital instrument cluster.
Look out for models fitted with desirable optional extras, like matrix LED headlights, adaptive cruise control and self-parking.
New third-generation models come as standard with a slick 14.5-inch OLED infotainment display, an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and keyless go.
The A5 name has been used for a few purposes, including sporty-looking spinoffs of the A4 and, later, the rebadged A4.
Consistent throughout is that it has shared its parts with the A4 family along with other Audi and VW models, which is great news for reliability.
It’s a reasonably simple car, and most engines are four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, which are about as normal as it gets, so looking after an A5 should be an affordable affair.
If you pick one of the 2.0-litre engines, particularly those with mild hybrid tech, you shouldn’t be paying more in running costs than you would for a hatchback.
Performance models with V6 engines are more appealing, and they can be cheaper to run than you might expect thanks to the Audi A5’s great aerodynamics.
A used Audi A5 for sale is a fashionable sports car that you can genuinely use every day – whether that’s a four-seater Coupé or Cabriolet, or the more practical Sportback with its rear doors.
Similar models include the BMW 3 Series, BMW 4 Series and Mercedes C-Class.
In third-generation Saloon and Avant formats, it picks up where the A4 left off, meaning it sits between appealing to families and company car drivers.
The Audi A5 Coupe offers a sleek, two-door design with a sporty profile, emphasising style.
In contrast, the A5 Sportback features a four-door design, providing enhanced practicality with a larger rear seat and more accessible cargo space.
Both share similar features but cater to different preferences in terms of aesthetics and functionality.
The Audi A5 stands out among luxury vehicles for its distinctive design, blending elegance with sportiness.
It offers advanced technology, dynamic performance, and versatile body styles like the Coupe and Sportback, providing a unique combination of style and functionality in the premium segment.
The Audi A5 offers performance upgrades such as a sport-tuned suspension, dynamic steering, and available Quattro all-wheel drive.
Performance-oriented variants like the S5 have a more powerful engine, enhancing acceleration and handling for those seeking a more spirited driving experience.
The A5 features an advanced infotainment system run on Audi's MMI system. It has a touchscreen display, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and virtual cockpit.
The Audi A5 has garnered positive reviews for its sleek design, refined interior, and dynamic performance.
While specific awards may vary, it often receives acclaim for its combination of style, technology and driving experience.
