2 Series Gran Coupe
Use our Help Me Choose tool to go from 1000s of cars to just a handful of recommendations — and cinch your search.
Start nowSharing more parts with the 1 Series than the 2 Series, the 2 Series Gran Coupé is a front-wheel-drive four-door model that was introduced in 2020.
Think about it in a similar way to how Audi offers its A3 as a saloon as well as a hatchback.
Popular BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé trims
There aren’t many trim levels to pick from, and most focus on styling enhancements. Even the most basic model comes with everything you’ll need.
> BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé Sport - Entry-level option with dual-zone climate control, cruise control and parking sensors
> BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé M Sport - Desirable high-spec edition with heated seats and more aggressive styling
> BMW M235i Gran Coupé - Performance model with 306hp 2.0-litre petrol engine and four-wheel drive
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé history
Introduced in 2020, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is a new model for the German car maker, but it’s more similar to the 1 Series under the bonnet.
> BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé (2020) - New coupé-like saloon model with a far softer style than the latest 2 Series Coupé
Every 2 Series Gran Coupé gets LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, dual-zone climate control and 10.25-inch infotainment and digital instrument cluster displays.
M Sport models offer heated seats, upgraded headlights and plenty of sporty styling details, such as striking alloy designs and tweaked bumper designs.
There are plenty of extras across the range, including keyless entry, a heated steering wheel, a reversing camera and a panoramic glass sunroof.
Don’t be put off that this is a new model because, under the extravagant body, the 2 Series Gran Coupé is very similar to the very reliable 1 Series. In fact, it also shares parts with other BMW and MINI models.
BMW’s warranty is an industry-average three-year cover, but at least there’s no mileage limit.
Despite its sporty looks, the 2 Series Gran Coupé’s 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines shouldn’t cost you any more to run than a typical family hatchback.
The only one to avoid if you like high mpg figures is the M235i, but even that can get more than 30mpg with some careful driving.
The 2 Series Gran Coupé is a great pick for young professionals in the city – it’s premium and stylish, but still relatively affordable and small enough to park in tight spaces.
Driving enthusiasts may turn their noses up at the fact that it’s a front-wheel-drive car, but it still offers responsive steering and agile handling.
It’s also very similar to the Audi A3 Saloon, Mercedes A-Class Saloon and Mercedes CLA if they’re on your list.
When it first went on sale, the cheapest 218i model in Sport trim was a little under £26,000, with M235i models costing more than £37,000.
Because the cheaper Sport trim was axed, new cars cost well over £30,000. Thankfully, there are plenty of used models sitting comfortably under £20,000.
Don’t be fooled by their names – they couldn’t be more different. Most importantly, the Coupé is a two-door model, and the Gran Coupé has a pair of rear doors.
They have totally different styles, and they’re different mechanically. The 2 Series Coupé is rear-wheel-drive, great for purists, but the Gran Coupé uses a more common front-wheel-drive setup.
It’s based on a family hatchback which means space inside is good, but be aware that the boot in a used BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is slightly harder to access because it has a narrower opening.
The 2 Series Gran Coupé is around 20cm longer than the 1 Series. However it’s 1.4cm shorter and 0.1cm wider, so it shouldn’t feel too different to drive.
You get 430 litres of boot space in the 2 Series Gran Coupé (50 litres more than the 1 Series), but it has a narrower saloon-style boot opening.
