About the BMW 7 Series

BMW has been making the 7 Series since 1977, and it’s been a hit ever since. Not only is it incredibly luxurious inside but it’s also a really pleasant car to drive (or be driven in, Your Highness). You can expect the utmost levels of luxury and comfortable seats – especially those in the back if you opt for the long wheelbase that gives you an extra 14cm of legroom. 

What we love about the exterior is how subtle it appears. The average passer-by wouldn’t really know that what they’re looking at is one of the most prestigious cars on the road today. There’s a reason the wedding of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco had 200 of these things to ferry guests around. 

No matter which model you opt for, you won’t be disappointed. Even a 7 Series from the '80s was so far ahead of its time we bet there are features in there that some new hatchbacks don’t even have yet.  

What features does the BMW 7 Series have?

The interior is the 7 Series’ bread and butter. It offers the kind of cabin you’d expect to find in a royal’s private jet or in one of the Sultan of Brunei’s many bedrooms.  

Even the entry-level model comes with a crisp 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, all-around parking sensors, a rearview camera and heated leather seats with a built-in massage system. 

But we’d expect that most buyers opted for higher-spec models from new, so if you're opting for a used model, you’re likely to be in for a treat. These include optional extras such as gesture control for the infotainment system, a cooled central armrest to store champagne (or water if you’re driving), an onboard Wi-Fi network, and powered rear sunshades. 

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available across the range so you don’t need to worry too much about learning another new infotainment system. 

What is the BMW 7 Series like to drive?

Not every 7 Series owner will actually be driving their expensive luxury saloon – because they'll have someone else to do that – but for those among us who enjoy driving or refuse to be driven, here’s what you can expect. 

The 7 Series will glide along pretty much any road, effortlessly absorbing any bumps in its path. Whether you’re cruising down the motorway or you’re driving down the tight road to your countryside manor, this car will have no issues. 

Engine options on the used car market range all the way from a three-litre diesel to a monstrous 6.6-litre petrol V12 capable of more than 200mph. There are also some economical plug-in hybrid versions available – in fact, you can only buy the new 7 Series as either a PHEV or an all-electric i7 model. 

While a rear-wheel drive V12 luxury barge may sound like a fun idea, it may not be for everyone, so BMW also offers some models with its all-wheel drive xDrive system for extra grip on those greasier days.
