Up to £3,750 off new EVs
In July 2025, the government launched an incentive to get new car buyers into electric vehicles (EVs) by earmarking £650 million in grant funding for eligible cars for sale under £37,000.
By the time the Autumn Budget came around in November 2025, an estimated 35,000 grants had been paid out.
It was at this point Chancellor Rachel Reeves allocated another £1.3 billion to the pot, effectively tripling the grant's reach.
Two levels of the Electric Car Grant are available – ‘Band 1’ (£3,750) and ‘Band 2’ (£1,500) – depending on the sustainability of how the car’s made, with the funding available until April 2029.
Carmakers need to apply to see if their models meet the sustainability standards, which includes factors such as emissions from the supply chain and production and the use of renewable energy.
What cars are eligible for the new Electric Car Grant?

Citroën
CUPRA
DS

There’s Passat levels of space inside from an extended wheelbase, but Golf-like exterior dimensions to keep it manoeuvrable.
More about the sustainability criteria
The grant isn’t just good news for consumers’ pockets, though, because the environmental and sustainability criteria say:
Batteries should retain at least 80% capacity over three years, and 70% over eight years/100,000 miles
Manufacturers offer an eight year/100,000-mile warranty on batteries
Carmakers must replace the battery if it falls below 70% capacity within eight years
Two extra years’ warranty is available at an additional cost
The whole car has a three year/60,000-mile warranty
