Start nowThe Nissan Micra is a compact hatchback model, also known as a supermini, which is great for drivers spending most of their time around town. That’s not to say it can’t handle itself on the motorway, where it feels settled and refined.
Five generations were available throughout the Micra’s time on sale, each with its own unique style. The final model was arguably the best-looking, with a sporty design made up of sharp angles and eye-catching colour options.
Popular Nissan Micra trims
Nissan uses the same trim level names across most of its models, and the Micra benefits from this simplicity. Like-for-like, a used Nissan Micra could have more equipment than some other superminis on the market.
> Nissan Micra Acenta - entry-level car with air-con, cruise control, automatic lights and wipers and seven-inch touchscreen
> Nissan Micra N-Sport - this sports-enhanced car has tinted windows and other black details, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera
> Nissan Micra Tekna - top-spec model with keyless entry, BOSE sound system and TomTom sat-nav
Nissan Micra history
The first generation was launched in 1982 and became an instant hit. Third- and fourth-generation cars became popular among schools of motoring for their light controls, and the fifth generation launched with a brand new look.
> Fourth-generation Nissan Micra (2010) - with similar looks to its predecessor, it came with a more modern interior
> Facelifted Nissan Micra (2013) - minor exterior styling tweaks and cleaner centre console
> Fifth-generation Nissan Micra (2016) - smart-looking supermini with high-quality cabin and simplified engine range shared with Renault
> Facelifted Nissan Micra (2019) - more standard equipment and new options, including attractive N-Sport trim
What you can expect with your used Nissan Micra depends on the model year, but it’s worth scouting out a facelifted fifth-gen car for a more modern-feeling car.
Although production ended several years ago, you still get safety tech like high-beam assist, lane-departure warning, AEB with pedestrian detection and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
All versions get a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it’s worth finding a mid-spec car for things like keyless entry, LED headlights, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera – all things that you’d typically expect in a larger, more expensive car.
Nissan is known for building reliable cars, and the Micra is one such Japanese model that’s known for being highly dependable.
The company’s own parts perform well, but the Micra also uses some Renault parts, which are also known to be reliable. An example is the small petrol engine that you can get in the fifth-generation model, which is also available in the Renault Clio.
There are no performance versions of the Micra, which means there’s no expensive Micra to run.
The 1.0-litre petrol engine, available with a few different power outputs, is capable of up to 50mpg, according to Nissan. A CVT automatic version takes a hit of around 5mpg.
The Renault-sourced 0.9-litre petrol that preceded it is just as efficient, as is the 1.5-litre diesel, however, this is a less common option.
A used Nissan Micra makes a lot of sense for younger and older drivers – anybody who wants to keep running costs to a minimum.
You can carry four with relative ease, five at a push, and there’s a sizeable 300-litre boot which is above average.
Other similarly stylish options include the Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and Hyundai i20.
You can get a used Nissan Micra on finance, but the cost will depend on the type of finance you go for and the model you choose.

The Nissan Micra has an excellent track record when it comes to reliability. This is due to its simple design and engineering, meaning its engines are bulletproof and are easy to fix and maintain.
A used Nissan Micra would make a good first car because it's relatively cheap to insure and is very reliable.
Nissan Micra models sit between insurance groups 1 and 9, making them cheap in the grand scheme of things. However, this will depend on the trim level you have. The higher the model spec, the more expensive the insurance will become.
The Nissan Micra sits between road tax bands A and G, putting it in the lower brackets compared to some of its rivals.
