ID.3
Use our Help Me Choose tool to go from 1000s of cars to just a handful of recommendations — and cinch your search.
Start nowThe Volkswagen ID.3 is a family hatchback, which means it occupies the same space in the market as the Golf.
Because it’s built from the ground up as an EV, and it isn’t a converted regular car, it’s packaged very well. VW says its interior space is more similar to that of the Passat – a much bigger car.
It might be an electric-only model, but there are three different battery options and plenty of power configurations to appeal to most types of drivers.
Popular Volkswagen ID.3 trims
Volkswagen has sold the ID.3 with a number of different trim levels over its time on sale, with choices slimming down during the global chip shortage in 2020 and more being added after its mid-life facelift.
> Volkswagen ID.3 Essential - facelifted entry-level spec with LED headlights, a 12.9-inch infotainment display, keyless go and adaptive cruise control
> Volkswagen ID.3 Match - well-equipped model with matrix LED headlights, keyless entry and heated front seats
> Volkswagen ID.3 GTX Performance - an electric hot hatch with 326hp, a Harman/Kardon sound system and adaptive chassis control
Volkswagen ID.3 history
Volkswagen introduced the ID.3 in 2020 at a similar time to the launch of the Mk8 Golf as its first ID-branded electric model, indirectly replacing the outgoing e-Golf which was based on the Mk7 Golf.
Since then, several other models have followed, including ID.4 and ID.5 crossovers, the ID.7 saloon and estate models, and the ID.Buzz.
> First-generation Volkswagen ID.3 (2020) - popular, affordable electric hatchback with plenty of configurations
> Facelifted Volkswagen ID.3 (2023) - sharper exterior design, trim level revisions and upgraded, bigger infotainment display
When the ID.3 first went on sale, Life was the entry-level model. It included LED headlights, tail lights and ambient interior lighting, keyless start, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a 10-inch infotainment display.
Upgraded Business, Family and Style cars added things like matrix LED headlights, a reversing camera, keyless entry and a panoramic sunroof.
Facelifted cars come with some extras, like automatic high beams, faster rapid charging and a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen.
Mechanically, the Volkswagen ID.3 has proven very reliable.
It’s built by a company known for its quality manufacturing, and it features fewer moving parts than a combustion-engined model which means there’s less to go wrong.
Earlier on, there were some software issues with the infotainment display. These should be ironed out now, but it’s worth checking if your used VW ID.3 has received the free update from dealers that enables over-the-air (OTA) updates.
All Volkswagen ID.3 models are cheap to run because they’re among the most efficient electric cars out there, thanks to their compact dimensions.
You can find a used VW ID.3 for sale with a choice of three batteries – 45kWh, 58kWh and 77kWh.
They’re good for a range of around 210, 260 and 340 miles, respectively. The GTX Performance has a bigger 79kWh battery and an extended 370-mile range.
A used Volkswagen ID.3 for sale is a great pick for drivers who typically buy high-quality hatchbacks like the Golf, but who are ready for lower-cost electric motoring.
It has all the benefits of a regular hatchback, like usable rear seats and a good-sized boot, which makes it a strong choice for families.
It’s a more premium alternative to the MG4, but also faces competition from the Nissan LEAF and Cupra Born.
The ID.3 has put Volkswagen on the electric vehicle map.
As a flagship electric model, the ID.3 showcases VW's commitment to sustainable mobility, offering an impressive range of up to 343 miles and innovative features, and demonstrates the brand's transition towards a more electrified future.
Driving the ID.3 brings environmental benefits with zero tailpipe emissions, reducing air pollution and mitigating climate impact.
As an electric vehicle, the ID.3 promotes sustainability, contributing to cleaner air and a lower overall carbon footprint compared to traditional combustion engine cars.
The Volkswagen ID.3 offers versatile charging options. With a standard home outlet, it charges overnight.
A home wallbox provides faster charging, and public DC fast chargers offer rapid top-ups, reaching 80% charge in around 30 minutes.
These options provide flexibility for ID.3 owners based on their charging needs and infrastructure availability.
Choosing the Volkswagen ID.3 offers advantages such as zero emissions, lower maintenance costs and a compact size ideal for urban driving.
Its electric drivetrain provides a smooth and silent ride, while the spacious interior and innovative features make it a practical and sustainable choice for daily commuting.
The ID.3 sits on VW's innovative MEB platform, advanced driver-assistance systems and an intuitive infotainment system.
Features like over-the-air updates and a digital cockpit showcase how far VW is ahead of some rivals.
