MG MG4 buying guide
What types of used MG4 cars are there?
MG has made sure to keep its MG4 lineup simple by offering five different trims. They range from the basic SE to the range-topping XPower.
Popular MG4 trims
> MG4 SE – The base SE car gets a respectable 51kWh battery with a 218-mile range and 168hp
> MG4 SE Long Range – Bumping range to 281 miles, the Long Range is the best for most people
> MG4 Trophy Long Range – With a great range and lots more tech such as a heated steering wheel, this is a great option building on the standard Trophy model
> MG4 Trophy Extended range – Need the most range possible? Go for the Extended range and enjoy 323 miles of range
> MG4 XPower – The powerful XPower of the MG4 is the XPower with 429hp at its disposal and orange brake caliper covers
MG4 history
The MG4 was first introduced to the European market in 2022 and was an instant success. With affordable prices and cool looks, it’s hard to ignore.
> MG4 first generation (2022-present)
What features does the MG4 have?
A used MG4 is one of those cars that never leaves you wanting more. It’s great fun to drive, it looks the part and it’s not short on tech.
Standout features of the MG4 include its 10.25-inch central screen that runs MG’s easy-to-use infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is also included.
Is the MG4 reliable?
The MG4 offers strong build quality and a solid motor setup.
Since it's electric, it should be more robust than petrol or diesel-powered cars because there are fewer moving parts to go wrong.
It’s also a safe car, scoring a full five stars following its recent Euro NCAP safety tests in 2022.
How much does the MG4 cost to run?
The main running cost for electric cars is charging. And how much this will set you back depends on where you charge your MG4.
If you use a home wall box charger, you can expect to pay anywhere from 8p-10p per kWh. Use a public fast charger and this can be north of 40p/kWh, but it will be a lot quicker.
It’s worth checking at your chosen charge point to get a better idea as prices are constantly changing.
Other costs such as maintenance shouldn’t be all that high, depending on how you use the car.
Insurance will be higher due to the car being so powerful, but the exact figure will vary depending on the driver’s history.
Who is the MG4 suitable for?
A used MG4 is one of those cars you can recommend to anyone.
It’s suitable for first-time EV drivers but also for anyone wanting to upgrade from a Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe.
If you’re looking at an MG4 then you should also consider a VW ID.3, Cupra Born and GWM Ora 03.
Should I buy a used MG4?
Are MG4 cars reliable?
Electric cars tend to be more reliable than petrol and diesel engine cars, and the MG4 is a great example of this.
Who makes the MG4?
The MG4 is made by MG, now owned by SAIC Motors in China.
What is the MG4’s range on the motorway?
In its top-spec, the MG4 can achieve up to 239 miles at motorway speeds. Opt for the base spec and this drops to 160 miles.
What is the MG4’s top speed?
The MG4’s top speed is limited to 99mph. Move up to the XPower and this increases to 124mph.
Does the MG4 have one-pedal driving?
Yes. If you set the regenerative braking to its maximum setting, it’s essentially one-pedal driving, but it’s not as aggressive as in some other cars.
