Start nowWhen the Ford EcoSport first launched in the UK in 2014, it arrived as the small crossover SUV market was booming. Every carmaker seemed to be producing one – so what makes the EcoSport stand out?
For starters, a used EcoSport is based on the tried-and-tested Fiesta platform, meaning it's reliable, dependable and familiar not only to Ford, but the driver too.
Inside, you’ll find it comforting to know that this model utilises many features from the Fiesta, including its dashboard, which is no bad thing because it's very functional and easy to use.
It’s a brilliant choice for many motorists, offering a practical model that doesn’t skip out on style to be sensible.
Trim levels include the Titanium, ST-Line and Active.

Inside, a used Ford EcoSport is a very pleasant place to be and feels very familiar because it shares so many parts with the brand’s smaller Fiesta hatchback.
Facelifted models from 2017 feature standard equipment such as an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system fitted with Ford’s SYNC 3 software, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a DAB radio, rear parking sensors and cruise control.
However, some higher-spec ST-Line models feature an upgraded 10-speaker B&O sound system.
Despite sitting on the Fiesta’s platform, the EcoSport has a larger boot, measuring in at 355 litres, which beats the hatchback by 63 litres.
There’s also more headroom too thanks to the EcoSport’s higher roofline, placing it about average in its class for interior space.
Being based on the Fiesta, you shouldn’t need to worry about the reliability of your EcoSport provided it’s well-maintained and serviced regularly.
It’s also a safe car too, scoring four out of five stars following its most recent Euro NCAP crash test in 2013. This is thanks to plenty of airbags, ESC and rear ISOFIX child seat points.
There’s quite a variety of engine choices for the Ford EcoSport – there are both petrol and diesel engines available.
All the petrol engines are based on the same 1.0-litre EcoBoost unit that produces either 100hp, 125hp or 140hp.
This is the better choice if you tend to drive around town, and Ford claims you’ll get around 54.3mpg from these engines.
As for the diesel engines, there is a 100hp 1.5-litre and a 125hp 1.5-litre EcoBlue model. The former is better if you do shorter drives, whereas the latter shines on the motorway, with Ford claiming it will get up to 53.3mpg.
Some older EcoSport models come with a 1.5-litre petrol engine too, but this was discontinued in 2021 and is only available to buy used.
A used Ford EcoSport is a great small SUV for families. Being a jacked-up Fiesta, you get similar styling but with greater practicality.
Plus, sitting up high makes it easier to see the road around you.
While there are other strong rivals such as the Volkswagen T-Roc and Mazda CX-3, the EcoSport has its Ford heritage to help with its overall appeal.
The EcoSport was first introduced in 2003 as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show.
The production version debuted in 2012, and it became Ford's entry into the compact SUV market.
It's smaller and more compact compared to other Ford SUVs like the Escape and Explorer in America. Its subcompact size makes it ideal for city driving, offering a balance of agility and SUV versatility.
The Ford EcoSport typically offers competitive fuel economy for a crossover SUV.
Specific figures vary based on the engine and driving conditions, but its compact size and efficient engine options contribute to a balanced blend of performance and fuel efficiency in this segment.
The Ford EcoSport offers a relatively compact interior compared to larger compact SUVs. While it provides ample space for its segment, those seeking more spacious interiors may consider larger alternatives within the compact SUV category.
It generally offers good visibility for the driver, thanks to its elevated seating position and large windows.
