Best luxury electric SUVs

Want to switch it up with a luxury electric SUV? Here are our favourites.

There are so many excellent luxury electric SUVs to choose from when, just a few years ago, we were limited to very few.

Too much choice can make things tricky though – which of options from brands all around the world is right for you?

Not to worry, we've listed our eight favourite luxury electric SUVs to help you figure out exactly that.

What are the best luxury electric SUVs?

  • BMW iX

  • Audi Q8 e-tron

  • Jaguar I-PACE

  • Volvo EX40

  • Mercedes EQC

  • Tesla Model X

  • Genesis GV70 Electrified

  • Porsche Macan Electric

Our picks for the best luxury electric SUVs

BMW iX front three quarters

BMW iX

There’s no denying that the iX is BMW’s most radical car since the i3 and i8, with its imposing grille and high-tech cabin paired to a proper air of quality.

With a range of up to 382 miles and a punchy electric motor producing up to 610hp, it has more than enough miles in the battery for most people’s daily life and it’s no slouch either.

Luxury features include a dual-screen curved display layout BMW calls ‘Live Cockpit Plus’, which gives you a wider view of all the car’s on-screen controls.

There’s even a wooden trim available for an organic aesthetic inside – a big departure from the strong lines of the exterior.

Audi Q8 e-tron driving along road

Audi Q8 e-tron

Audi’s flagship electric SUV, the Q8 e-tron, is refined, luxurious and incredibly good.

On the outside, the under-the-radar styling is typical Audi, and inside it’s truly beautiful – full of leather and tech. Even the side mirrors have been replaced with cameras.

Sitting proudly in the middle is a 10.1-inch touchscreen that runs Audi’s MMI infotainment system which is easy to use and well-laid-out.

Drive the Q8 e-tron and you’ll quickly feel how settled and relaxing it is, with that ultra-quiet electric power adding to the premium feeling.

Jaguar I-PACE

Before its sci-fi Type 00 concept at the end of 2024, the I-PACE was the most radical thing Jaguar had done in years.

And it’s still a cracking car today, with smart styling and futuristic interior – especially the dedicated climate control screen, which is actually great to use, unlike similar systems.

Go for a high-spec I-PACE and it unlocks the full Meridian 3D sound system, which sounds really rather impressive.

Since it’s a Jag, it always feels like an event when you get behind the wheel, and you can tell the British brand took its time with how poised this electric SUV feels on the open road.

Green Volvo EX40

Volvo EX40

A Volvo always gives off a quiet luxury that is classically Scandinavian, and the EX40 is the definition of this in electric SUV form.

The Volvo EX40 (previously XC40 Recharge) is well-thought-out – both inside and out – as you’d expect.

Everything from its nine-inch touchscreen to the little gear selector toggle is perfectly machined in a way that keeps the cabin clutter-free.

On the road, the EX40 is nice and comfortable, but the most important part is the safety, which Volvos are known for.

Mercedes EQC driving

Mercedes EQC

Mercedes entered the luxury electric SUV game in 2019 with the EQC and it was everything you’d expect – comfortable, practical and tech-filled. Not to mention premium.

Based on the existing GLC platform, the German brand was able to electrify a tried-and-tested formula to add to an already upmarket, quality car.

It was an early example of Mercedes’ excellent dual-screen setup you find across the range today, and this still feels as ahead of its time today as it did when it came out in the EQC.

Tesla Model X rear seats

Tesla Model X

The Model X is the biggest car Tesla has ever sold in the UK, and it’s packed full of all the great and innovative features found in the rest of its range.

Some of these include Autopilot, a massive 17-inch infotainment screen, a 22-speaker sound system and falcon wing doors, which not only look cool but help you get out in tight spaces.

Of course, a Model X is lightening quick, but it’s also super-practical with solid range and some examples coming with seven seats.

As of May 2023, Tesla doesn’t sell them new here anymore, but there are plenty on the used market to enjoy.

Genesis GV70 front three quarters

Genesis GV70 Electrified

The luxury arm of Hyundai, Genesis, has been gaining popularity in recent years and is a brand dedicated to building some of the most luxurious cars on the market. Since they share a lot of parts with Toyota, they’ll also be reliable.

The GV70 Electrified is one of the larger SUVs the brand makes, offering sophisticated styling and a clever active noise-cancelling system to make your journeys that bit quieter. As if a luxury electric SUV wasn’t quiet enough already.

And if that’s not enough for you, it gets a fingerprint authentication system to unlock the car. How cool is that?

an orange Porsche Macan Electric driving on track

Porsche Macan Electric

If you like the petrol-powered Macan then you’re going to love the Macan Electric. You get all the same features but with instant acceleration and silent motoring.

From its dual screens to its easy-to-navigate Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system, it’s truly a tech fest in there.

Porsche’s baby SUV is also just as fantastic to drive in electric form as it is petrol – just as you’d expect from any Porsche product. This is the true driver’s choice.

What makes a luxury car?

There are many reasons why a car becomes a luxury car, and the main ones are:

  • Materials – using leather, carbon fibre, wood, expensive metals can all make a car more luxurious

  • Technology – having the large screens and clever driver assistances make things feel more upmarket

  • Safety features – generally, the safer a car, the better it has been designed and the more premium it is

  • Performance – not always, but very often, luxury cars are also powered by big, expensive engines or electric powertrains

  • Reputation – think of luxury and Rolls-Royce, Bentley and many of the brands on our list probably spring to mind – that’s reputation

  • Heritage – like reputation, heritage is earned over time and often the crème de la crème brands have heritage backing up their quality

Features to look out for in a luxury electric SUV

There are many reasons you should buy a luxury electric SUV, and the available features are just one part of it. Here are the best things to look out for:

  • High-end materials

  • Great build quality

  • Smooth and comfortable ride

  • Quiet interior

  • Infotainment system

  • High-def screens with good software

  • Panoramic sunroof

Which car brands are known for their luxury electric SUVs?

There are so many great brands known for their luxury electric SUVs, but some that consistently deliver include Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Volvo and now Porsche.
