The Q5 launched in 2008 as a rival for the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander.

It was designed by Audi to be an unbeatable, sporty five-seater with four-wheel drive on all models. Now, it’s one of the most beloved premium SUVs and keeps getting better with each update. 

It’s now available as a plug-in hybrid, which is great for economising but also for the environment. Opt for the Sportback version if you want a sloping coupé-style roof for added flair.  

It shares some of the muscular, visually imposing looks of the Q7 but is more affordable. Its mid-sized shape gives you an elevated driving position and its tough build makes you feel confident on any road.

What features does the Audi Q5 have?

The Q5 is classy, refined, and a dominating presence on the road. It’s got a lot of the might of the Q7 but is more compact.  

Inside, it’s just as tasteful, with one of the highest-quality interiors you’ll find in its category. Expect to find luxurious leather, a floating 10-inch infotainment screen, a digital cockpit for the driver and chunky but beautifully-designed controls. 

The Q5 Premium is the entry-level trim and gets standard features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  

The Q5 Vorsprung is the top-spec model and gets all the standard features, plus heads-up display and ventilated front sports seats.  

The cabin is very roomy, with plenty of space for five – even with adults in the back – and the boot is nice and big at 550-610 litres. It’s truly designed with functionality in mind, so there’s huge storage space, cleverly designed holders and well-placed controls.

What is the Audi Q5 like to drive?

You can get a used Q5 with a range of engines, depending on what suits your needs.  

There’s a 2.0-litre petrol engine and is fitted with the standard Q5 four-wheel drive. This one is a nippy model and has some power on the roads, so is a good choice if you fancy something with sporty flair.  

If you want something more fuel-efficient, there are a few diesel options to choose from. You can get a chunky 3.0-litre offering that is quick off the line and has some punch on the road.  

There’s also a plug-in hybrid, offering even more fuel efficiency than the diesels and allowing you to do some electric-only cruising.  

A blissful part of driving the Audi Q5 is how little noise enters the car. It’s brilliantly quiet thanks to Audi’s expertise in aerodynamics, with almost no wind or road surface noise disturbing the peace as you cruise along.
