Tesla Model 3 vs. Tesla Model Y: which is better?

Not sure which Tesla you want? Here's a comparison between the Model 3 and Model Y to help you decide

No matter what Tesla does, every new model it brings out is an instant hit – but that’s what you get when you’re the most recognisable electric vehicle manufacturer in the world.

The Tesla Model 3 hatchback and Tesla Model Y small SUV are two of the brand’s most popular vehicles here in the UK.

In fact, they’re so sought-after they’re the only two models the brand sells new in this country.

With that in mind, which one is better for you?

Our review will answer:

  • Does the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y look better?

  • Is the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y better to drive?

  • Does the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y have a better interior?

  • Is the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y more practical?

  • Is the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y more reliable?

Styling

Being so closely related, the Model 3 and Model Y look very similar. In essence, the Y is just a larger version, so it still has the same headlight design and side styling.

The main difference can be seen at the rear, where the Y has a visibly larger boot and a taller rear spoiler with more of a curve.

All you need to do is look at the Model X and Model S to get a real sense of the similarities between all ‘S3XY’ models in Tesla’s lineup.

Tesla has managed to create a unique shape that’s aerodynamic to improve range and futuristic to stand out from the crowd.

It’s not an easy design feat but Tesla’s design team has nailed it.

What are they like to drive?

Behind the wheel, you may think both cars are the same because they’re almost identical underneath, but there are some distinct differences.

Hop into the Model Y and you’ll instantly notice the raised seating position compared to the smaller 3.

Because both interiors are almost the same, the screen feels lower in the Y. Switch to the Model 3 and you’re instantly lower to the ground for a sportier feel.

How do they both do for power? The Model 3 produces between 279hp and 527hp, while the Model Y produces between 295hp and 527hp.

This depends massively on the model variant, with the ‘Performance’ ones topping the range.

As for battery stats, the Model 3 offers up to a claimed 374 miles of range, while the Model Y has a claimed range of up to 331 miles.

This all depends on the model chosen, but the Long Range variants are preferable for increased range figures.

Either way, you’ll have a fast electric car that can travel more than 300 miles on a single charge, putting it in the upper echelons of production EVs for the masses.

Interior and technology

You may think Volvo wins when it comes to minimalist interior design, but step inside any Tesla and you may change your mind.

The Tesla Model 3’s interior was the first to get a landscape infotainment screen, with older Model S and Model X models having a portrait one.

This newer design makes it easier to see maps, read your speed (since there are no gauges above the steering wheel) and even play games.

That’s right, all Teslas come with an app store that allow you to play racing games or watch a Netflix movie, all while the vehicle is stationary.

There’s a seriously impressive level of tech in both cars, all of which are shared across the range.

The only notable difference is that the screen appears lower in the Model Y due to the raised driving position.

Other than that, the interiors are identical and very comfortable.

Choosing a used Tesla Model 3 or Model Y can be a great way to grab a high-spec model at a lower price. You might be able to find a used Tesla that wouldn't suit your budget when brand-new.

Boot space and practicality

The main difference between the two cars become apparent when we discuss boot space and practicality.

You get 425 litres of boot space in the Model 3 and 854 litres in the Model Y. Both are plenty for most people, but if you need that little bit of extra room then the latter is the one for you.

Likewise with seats. The Model 3 is only available with five seats, but the Model Y can be had with up to seven, making it better for family life.

This is currently only in the US market, but this may make its way to the UK.

Safety and reliability

When it comes to safety and reliability, Teslas perform very well. Both the Model 3 and Model Y scored a full five stars following their most recent Euro NCAP crash testing.

Being electric, there’s very little that can go wrong because there are fewer moving parts than inside a traditional internal combustion engine.

But like all cars, there’s no such thing as flawless perfection, and things will go wrong but less frequently than with others.

It's worth noting that maintaining a premium car like a Tesla can be more expensive. You might want to take your car to a specialist and parts are usually more expensive since you're paying for higher quality. This does mean that repairs should be fewer and further between as you're investing in the best from the get-go.

Verdict: Tesla Model 3 vs. Tesla Model Y which should you buy?

If you’ve read our full comparison and still haven’t quite made your mind up, then perhaps our short verdict will help point you in the right direction.

For families, we’d lean more towards the Model Y because it has a larger cabin, massive boot and higher seats so you can see around the car, making it more fun for kids to see the world go by.

However, the Model 3 is the option for couples and those who enjoy sportier driving because you’re lower to the ground and have up to 527hp.

There’s also more range for those longer motorway journeys.
