What types of used Tesla Model S cars are there?

The Tesla Model S has been on our roads since 2012 and has proven incredibly popular for families and electric car nuts, but you can no longer buy them brand-new in the UK. 

Older examples can be had in 70, 85, P85D, P90D and P100D trims, but newer models are available exclusively in Base and Plaid spec. The Long Range model is a popular choice.

What features does the Tesla Model S have?

When it comes to tech, Teslas are incredibly well-equipped.

Despite having a very minimalist interior, the Model S is one of the most technologically advanced cars you can buy, with all its features sitting in its large central 17-inch infotainment screen. 

From this, you can control features such as the clever air suspension, headlights, maps and music as well as the sunroof and glovebox.

It’s much less fiddly than it may sound, and it's one of the smoothest systems on the market. Newer Model S cars get a screen in front of the rear seats too, allowing rear-seat passengers to control the music and A/C. 

Two of its most notable features are Autopilot and Tesla’s supercharger network.

While the self-driving technology is constantly improving by the day, we’re not at the stage where Teslas can drive without human input on motorways or navigate around built-up areas.

It’s an extra cost to consider but worth thinking about if you do a lot of long-distance driving. 

When it comes to electric vehicle charging, it doesn’t get better than Tesla’s network. It’s seamless to use and they’re everywhere, so you shouldn’t be caught out. 

Is the Tesla Model S reliable?

Being an electric car, the Model S is very reliable as it has fewer moving parts than a conventional petrol or diesel car.

They’re also built to a very high standard, which helps with the overall durability of the vehicle. Older models suffered from poorer build quality, but this has improved tenfold in recent years. 

When it was tested by Euro NCAP in 2022, the Model S scored a full five stars, offering high levels of safety for both adults and children.

This is thanks to safety features such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning and advanced airbags.  

How much does the Tesla Model S cost to run?

Like with all electric cars, the cost of charging depends on where you charge it.

If you plug it in at home, it’ll charge slowly but will cost far less at around 30p per kWh. Use a public fast charger, which gets you a full charge in around 30 minutes, and it’ll cost 77p per kWh. 

Who is the Tesla Model S suitable for? 

The Tesla Model S is ideal for those entering the electric car space or for existing EV owners wanting an upgrade. From oodles of tech to its nippy driving experience, you won’t get bored of it any time soon. 

It may be slightly more expensive than the Model 3, but for the extra space and power, it’s worth it.
