Cars like a Jeep you should consider
There aren't many cars as iconic as Jeep, but maybe a Jeep isn't suitable for your exact needs, so you might be looking for Jeep-like cars – be it cars that look like Jeeps or ones that are good for off-roading.
In this guide, we break down a list of eight models that can be compared to a variety of different Jeep models, so you can pick the right crossover or SUV for your preferences.
Popular Jeep models include:

Land Rover Defender
The Land Rover Defender has decades of history in several forms, but it has remained a consistently good off-roader in all its shapes.
Compared with the Jeep Wrangler, it's the superior off-roader, with 37mm more ground clearance (290mm), a 140mm higher maximum wading depth (900mm) and greater approach and breakover angles (up to 37.5 degrees and 40.0 degrees).
It's considerably more expensive than the Wrangler because it offers a much more luxurious interior, but you can save thousands buying a used Land Rover Defender. Plus, you can get one to suit your every need – the '90' has three doors, the '110' has five, and the '130' is a super-long eight-seater.
INEOS Grenadier
Inspired by older and classic Defender models, the INEOS Grenadier keeps that old-school, boxy design but without forgoing all the mod cons inside.
It features a ladder-frame chassis which is great for off-roading, permanent four-wheel drive and no fewer than three locking differentials. And better still, power comes from BMW's 3.0-litre, straight-six petrol or diesel engines.
You get fairly similar figures in terms of the Grenadier's capabilities compared with the Jeep Wrangler, but the INEOS does have a significantly better departure angle of 36.1 degrees compared with 31.8 degrees.
Toyota Land Cruiser
This is another firm favourite among adventurous drivers – the durable and reliable Toyota Land Cruiser is as popular as its pickup sibling, the Hilux, in regions where conditions get really tough. Think deserts, snowy peaks and dense rainforests.
The updated model, introduced in 2024, features a new body-on-frame foundation which Toyota says helps to improve terrain response, ride and handling.
You could compare this to the Jeep Wrangler in terms of design, because both have prominent grilles, bold 'TOYOTA' or 'JEEP' lettered badging and a boxy yet loveable design.
Mercedes G-Class
Chances are, if you like the Jeep Wrangler, it's because you appreciate the iconic design and how the company has kept it alive. If you like that, you'll like the Mercedes G-Class, which has barely changed (visually) since 1979.
That's outside, though, because inside, newer models have a dual-screen setup, heated leather seats and even temperature-controlled cup holders (yes, hot and cold).
Better still, if you're not after a large petrol or diesel engine, including the iconic G63 performance edition, you can have the brand-new electric G-Wagen (a shortening of its German name, the Geländewagen). It'll wade through 850mm of water (150mm more than the fossil fuel-powered G-Class and 90mm more than the Jeep Wrangler), but you still get a solid electric range of around 280 miles.
Suzuki Jimny
Much like the Jeep Renegade, the Suzuki Jimny is a compact and agile 4x4 that combines off-road abilities with easy manoeuvrability – two things that you might not think would be possible to combine.
It's extremely light, and just as affordable, but you still get some big credentials, such as a four-wheel drive system with a low-range transfer gear.
Much like the Renegade, the Jimny is cheap to run. It doesn't have a hybrid system, but the 1.5-litre engine is as light on fuel as you'd expect.
Subaru Forester
The Subaru Forester isn't that similar to a Jeep in terms of styling – it's bigger than the Compass, smaller than the Grand Cherokee, and has more of an estate look than an SUV.
Its key selling point is the standard-fit symmetrical all-wheel drive system, which means the Forester should perform consistently well across a wider variety of conditions. Perfect for us in the UK, where it can be snowy one day, rainy the next, and sunny for an hour or two in between.
The iconic boxer engine lives on even in newer Forester models, but they get the addition of an electric motor. The self-charging hybrid system not only boosts torque a bit, but it helps every drop of petrol go that little bit further, similar to Jeep's hybrid systems.
Land Rover Discovery
The Land Rover Discovery might not look entirely like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but they're kindred spirits. Both models come from two of the biggest brands in off-roading, but both models also offer a more car-like feel with higher levels of luxury.
Some of the latest-generation Grand Cherokee's highlights are a 10.1-inch infotainment display, heated and cooled seats and air suspension. All features that are matched by the Discovery, which has an 11.4-inch screen, heated and cooled seats and air suspension.
The best part about owning a Land Rover Discovery is that you also have two pop-up seats in the boot. They might be best used by children, not adults, but we'd rather have the option than not. The Jeep is only a five-seater.
Dacia Duster
Another example of kindred spirits, the Dacia Duster makes a perfect alternative to the Jeep Avenger. They're both compact crossovers with optional four-wheel drive systems and budget-friendly price tags.
Now available with hybrid powertrain options, the Duster makes it even cheaper to run a 4x4 in urban environments, with a claimed 46mpg available from the mild hybrid system paired with four-wheel drive, and 57mpg from the front-wheel-drive self-charging hybrid.
If you're thinking about getting a Duster, it's worth opting for mid-range and higher trim levels to make sure you get more than just the essentials. For example, Expression models add a touchscreen infotainment display and a reversing camera.
