Start nowThe crossover SUV market is very crowded, with endless options from almost all car manufacturers.
One that has proven to be very popular since it first launched in 2006, however, is a the Jeep Compass.
It offers so much in its class and punches way above its weight. And it sits between the smaller Renegade and larger Wrangler and Grand Cherokee models.

The Compass has seen some drastic facelifts over the years, and newer models look as good outside as they do inside.
Its sharp styling and clean cabin make for a great family vehicle that can do it all.
Popular Jeep Compass trims
You can get a used Jeep Compass in a variety of different trims, ranging from sportier ones to more luxurious models. Here are some of the most popular:
> Jeep Compass Altitude – entry point that gets 18-inch wheels, heated wing mirrors, faux-leather seats and a large 10.1-inch display
> Jeep Compass Summit – mid-spec with rear parking sensors, ventilated front seats, larger 19-inch wheels as well as a plug-in hybrid 4x4 setup
> Jeep Compass Trailhawk – proper off-road spec with chunkier tyres, raised suspension, underbody protection and a special gearbox to help with off-roading
Jeep Compass history
The Jeep Compass has been out longer than you may think, with it being unveiled four years before launch at the North American International Auto Show.
> First-generation Jeep Compass (2007-2017) - unlike most other Jeeps, the Compass wasn’t originally designed for off-road use, not even carrying Jeep’s ‘Trail Rated’ badge until 2011
> Second-generation Jeep Compass (2017-present) - a more grown-up car with hybrid tech and more features
Considering it’s a baby SUV, it would be wrong not to start with boot space.
The Compass has a large 438-litre boot – just shy of 100 litres larger than that of the Renegade on which it's based.
Moving into the cabin, the Compass offers plenty of comfort and space for adults sitting in the second row of seats.
The materials used throughout have a solid, quality feel and the vehicle’s chunky steering wheel is nice to hold and complements the Jeep’s rugged nature.
The infotainment system found in the Compass is much better too, thanks to faster processing chips and sharper graphics.
If you don’t fancy using Jeep’s in-built software, however, you can simply connect your smartphone to the display using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Thanks to Jeep sharing parts across its models, the Compass offers strong levels of reliability.
In particular, the Compass is similar to the tried-and-tested Renegade model, which is also well-built with solid engine options.
In terms of safety, Compass models come with a forward collision warning system, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and blind spot detection.
The Jeep Compass is great both on and off the road thanks to its rugged heritage and great engine options – especially the four-wheel drive versions.
Current Compass models are available with three different engine options. The first is the 1.3-litre petrol engine that produces 130hp, and Jeep claims it will return 40mpg with regular driving.
Moving up the range is the 1.5-litre self-charging hybrid that offers more fuel efficiency and can run on electric-only for short periods of time around town at slow speeds.
This is probably the best engine for most people because it's good on fuel and is happy for longer journeys.
However, if you want some serious power and efficiency then we would recommend looking at the 240hp 1.3-litre plug-in hybrid in the 4xe, which Jeep claims will return up to 150mpg and can drive 30 miles on electric range alone.
Not only is it great around town, it’s the one to have if you plan on doing the odd bit of off-roading.
Older variants available on the used market may come with a 2.0-litre diesel too, which will be the best when it comes to towing.
A used Jeep Compass is the sort of car that buyers often forget about.
Overshadowed by its German competitors, the Compass isn't as popular on UK roads, but that doesn't mean it's not worthy.
In fact, we’d say it’s pretty cool to be a bit different and drive a Compass.
Speaking of its rivals, the main ones are the Peugeot 3008, Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq.
4Xe variants of the Compass come with four-wheel drive, but all others feature front-wheel drive.
The Compass is a very safe car and in 2017 scored a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, offering high levels of protection for both adult and child occupants.
We would say the Compass is a great family car because it's economical, safe, reliable and well-sized. You don’t need to worry about squeezing it into tight spaces all that much.
The Compass is exceptional off-road, providing you opt for a four-wheel drive variant. Thanks to its heritage, this Jeep won’t let you down.
Depending on the model, the Compass can tow between 1,000kg and 1,500kg.
