Defender
Use our Help Me Choose tool to go from 1000s of cars to just a handful of recommendations — and cinch your search.
Start nowThe Defender has always had a boxy look indicative of its tough, off-road credentials, but Land Rover revised this for the 2020 model to give it a bit of glam.
You can pick from 90 or 110 models, which have three or five doors, as well as newer 130 models which are extremely long and come with seven seats.
Some versions can also have a narrow seat between the two front seats, suitable for occasional use and designed mostly for commercial purposes.
Earlier models tended to come with more agricultural engines, which were by no means incapable of tackling the steepest hills and the deepest trenches, but newer cars offer refined V6 and V8 motors for effortless performance.
Popular Land Rover Defender trims
There are plenty of trim levels to choose from, including the usual Land Rover packs as well as a few special and sporty editions.
> Land Rover Defender S - the cheapest car still gets LED headlights, a 360-degree parking camera and keyless entry
> Land Rover Defender X-Dynamic SE - the next trim level up, this adds a Meridian sound system, a sliding panoramic sunroof and some extra styling
> Land Rover Defender X-Dynamic HSE - the highest core trim level before special editions, you get soft leather upholstery and matrix LED headlights
Land Rover Defender history
The Land Rover Defender was born in 1983. It was officially badged the Defender in 1990 and remained largely unchanged until the new 2020 model.
> Land Rover Defender (2020) - a very modern take on the classic off-roader, this is bigger and better in every way
Standard equipment on the most basic 2020 Land Rover Defender is strong, with a heated windscreen, LED headlights with automatic high beams, keyless entry and adaptive cruise control all standard.
You also get all-round parking sensors and a 360-degree parking camera to help you park, displayed on a large Pivi Pro infotainment display that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Top-spec cars add premium touches like a heated steering wheel, electric adjustment for the steering column, and soft leather upholstery.
Land Rover has received some negative press in recent years about the reliability of some of its models, but the Defender is generally a mechanically sound SUV.
To counter some industry-wide concerns, it gets a built-in tracker and a special authentication technology between the key and the car to highlight if the car gets stolen with a dedicated team.
Older Defender models aren’t particularly efficient, while newer 2020-on cars are heavier and use bigger engines. This all means that you’re unlikely to exceed 30-40mpg in most circumstances, which is to be expected in an SUV of this size.
Insurance, tax and maintenance can also be on the pricey side, but this is more evident in newer versions.
Buying a used Land Rover Defender for sale gets you not only an extremely capable car, but one that passers-by are sure to admire.
If you need something as rugged and capable, you could consider a Jeep Wrangler, but chances are you’re after a Defender for its upmarket appeal. In which case, why not consider a Mercedes G-Class or Porsche Cayenne.
You can buy a brand-new Defender for between £58,000 and £117,000, but buy a used example and you can save upwards of £50,000.
This depends on what you’re after. The base SE model would be more than enough for most people, but if you want a bit more tech, choose one of the higher specs.
The Defender in three-door 90 trim stands at 1,974mm tall, but choose a longer 110 or 130 and they stand at 1,967mm and 1,970mm respectively.
If you want an amazing off-roader that’s well-built and packed full of tech for your family, then it doesn’t get better than a Defender. Buy an older model and you could potentially be sitting on a future classic.
You absolutely can. From 2019, Defenders became incredibly easy to live with, boasting plenty of power, a smooth automatic gearbox, and lots of tech and high-quality speakers for all your tunes.
