What is fuel efficiency?

Simply put, fuel efficiency is how far your car will be able to travel on a certain amount of fuel.

If a vehicle can cover major miles without needing too much fuel, this means it’s a model with good fuel efficiency. Cars with poor fuel efficiency will need to fill up more often to take longer trips.

You’ll usually find that models that are built for performance and capable of high speeds and ferocious acceleration have poor fuel efficiency.

This comes with the territory and it likely won't be a surprise to motorists on the market for one of these cars.

Peugeot offers models with great fuel efficiency that are ideal for everyday use. Plug-in hybrid Peugeot models such as the 308, 3008 and 508 are ideal for saving money on fuel with a punch of electric power.

How does Peugeot ensure fuel efficiency in its cars?

Manufacturers like Peugeot work hard to ensure the best fuel efficiency in their cars as this can be a major reason behind motorists buying their cars.

A huge part of this is the move towards hybrid and fully-electric vehicles. Models like the Peugeot e-208, e-2008, and e-traveller are fully electric so don’t rely on fuel at all – saving you some serious money on running costs.

There are also mild hybrid offerings like in the 3008 and 5008 range, meaning these cars have some electric driving technology that uses regenerative braking to supplement the fuel in your car.

During the manufacturing process, fuel efficiency can also be improved by taking care to choose lightweight materials that won’t increase the weight of the car.

The heavier the vehicle, the more fuel it will usually take to get moving.

You can also improve fuel efficiency yourself by keeping an eye on your driving technique and ensuring you drive sensibly, not hitting too high speeds.

Getting rid of unnecessary loads from your vehicle can also help improve fuel economy.

How do I assess the fuel efficiency of my Peugeot?

You’ll usually be able to find the fuel efficiency rating of a Peugeot model before you purchase, so you can get an idea of how much fuel you’ll be using.

On our website, we list the miles per gallon (MPG) of our used Peugeot cars in the ‘running costs’ section.

You can also calculate your own MPG figure in a few easy steps:

  1. Fill up your tank and multiply the number of litres it took to fill up by 0.219. This converts the figure into gallons

  2. Subtract your starting mileage by the final number of miles you’ve covered

  3. Divide the number of miles covered by the gallons of fuel you filled up with. This number is your MPG figure

Most modern cars – including many Peugeots – have onboard computers that will calculate this figure for you.

Which Peugeot models have the best fuel economy?

There are many Peugeot models that offer impressive fuel economy, but the most impressive will always be the hybrid models.

The Peugeot 308 hybrid can cover up to 37 miles on electric power alone – that's 37 miles that you won’t need to use fuel to get moving. This means that you can get up to 293.9mpg, according to Peugeot.

For something larger, the Peugeot 3008 hybrid can cover up to 40 miles using its electric battery. Peugeot claims this leads to a figure of 235.4mpg.

If you don’t want to switch over to hybrid power but still want a fuel-efficient Peugeot, the 208 model is a great small option.

Diesel engines can achieve up to 73.6mpg, while petrol options can achieve up to 56.7mpg. There’s also a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.

The Peugeot 5008 is an efficient option for a larger model, offering up to 60.8mpg from the diesel engines, while petrols can offer up to 48.3mpg.
