When Peugeot unveiled the new 508 in 2018, we thought they'd made a mistake, because it looked that much prettier than the previous generation.  

Styling aside, the new 508 is one of the best cars in its class, offering great value, strong practicality, fuel efficiency and comfort.   

It's available with either a petrol, diesel or hybrid engine, making it very versatile for the buyer and fuel-efficient in all forms.    

The 508’s main rivals are the Skoda Superb, Volkswagen Passat, Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia.

Is the Peugeot 508 reliable?

Being a modern car, you shouldn't need to worry about reliability, especially with large companies such as Stellantis (the owner of Peugeot) sharing parts across its brand’s models.  

Peugeot is also very safety-conscious, which is why the 508 earned a full five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2018. This was thanks to its excellent standard safety features such as emergency brake assist, cruise control and lane keep assist.

What are the Peugeot 508's features?

The Peugeot 508’s funky styling carries through to the interior. Every model features a futuristic-looking design with a cockpit you’d expect to find in a fighter jet. The steering wheel is an unorthodox shape too, but it works well underneath the swanky digital gauge cluster.  

Peugeot’s I-Cockpit is very easy to use and works well for everything, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The car’s 10-inch display faces slightly towards the driver for a more cockpit-style of driving.  

All models come as standard with the above, Bluetooth and a DAB digital radio, while optional extras seen on top-spec cars include a 360-degree parking camera and a better sound system.  

Rear-seat passengers won’t complain either, with plenty of space for three abreast and a set of comfortable seats that fold down to reveal a 487-litre boot or 530 litres in the 508 SW estate. This increases to 1,780 litres when the rear seats are folded flat. 

What's the Peugeot 508 like to drive?

There are plenty of engine options, including three diesel, two petrol and a plug-in hybrid – with most cars coming with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.   

The entry-level diesel produces 130hp and is the only model that comes with a manual gearbox as standard – something to look out for if you’re an auto ‘box lover. Even with a manual, Peugeot claims the smallest diesel will return up to 60mpg, which is very impressive.  

Moving up the range is a larger diesel that produces either 160hp or 180hp and is the better option if you want a fuel-efficient diesel with a little more poke.  

There’s also a range of PureTech petrol engines that are happy both in town and on longer motorway journeys. Peugeot claims they will return around 40mpg, while the more powerful 225hp variant will offer slightly less.  

At the top of the range is the 508 plug-in hybrid powered by a 225hp petrol engine with assistance from an 80kw electric motor, making it more economical.  

This is by far the best option if you live in a big city or town because you can run it on all-electric mode for up to 30 miles, with up to 217mpg.
