Start nowThe Peugeot 308 is the French manufacturer’s answer to the humble family hatchback, but it gets some real French flair that makes it more interesting to look at than many of its safer-looking rivals.
It’s also one of the dwindling number of family hatchbacks that’s available as an estate – you benefit from a bigger 608-litre boot (compared with 412 litres for the hatchback), but it’s still compact enough to drive around town.
Popular Peugeot 308 trims
You can get the Peugeot in a handful of trim levels, and while higher specs were previously better, third-generation models are pretty kitted out from the get-go.
> Peugeot 308 Active - entry-level model with LED headlights, rear parking sensors and digital instrument cluster
> Peugeot 308 Allure - mid-spec car gets a wide-angle reversing camera, high beam assist and customisable shortcut buttons on a touchscreen
> Peugeot 308 GT - a sporty-looking range-topper with matrix LED headlights, ambient lighting and 3D-effect instrument cluster
Peugeot 308 history
The Peugeot 308 was first introduced in 2007 to replace the Peugeot 307. There have now been three versions of the 308, each with its own unique look. Here are some of the most popular Peugeot 308 generations:
> Second-generation Peugeot 308 (2013) - smart-looking hatchback that would pass as a more premium model
> Facelifted Peugeot 308 (2017) - exterior design refresh with sharper lines and LED lighting, plus a more efficient diesel engine
> Third-generation Peugeot 308 (2021) - more modern design with plenty of technology inside
Third-generation models come as standard with rear parking sensors, LED headlights and a touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making them excellent value.
High-spec models add extras like a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and matrix LED headlights that adapt to prevent blinding oncoming traffic.
A separately badged electric variant, the e-308, gets more equipment to justify its higher price tag, such as heated seats and a heated steering wheel.
The Peugeot 308 is known to be a reliable, long-lasting family hatchback, which is exactly what a family needs.
It shares many of its mechanical parts, including its efficient engines, with the Vauxhall Astra and DS 4, along with a wide range of other Peugeot, Citroen, DS and Vauxhall models, so most parts are already tried and tested.
Whichever Peugeot 308 you decide to buy, it’s almost guaranteed to be about as efficient as this size of hatchback gets.
There are 1.2-litre petrols, with and without mild hybrid support, and a 1.5-litre diesel – they should all be able to exceed 40mpg on a long trip, and the mild hybrid can do around one-third to one-half of town journeys in electric mode from our experience.
For reduced running costs, consider one of the two plug-in hybrid variants or an electric model with a range of up to around 250 miles.
A used Peugeot 308 for sale makes a lot of sense for the style-conscious – yes, it’s a practical family hatchback, but it’s also something you won’t be embarrassed to be seen in.
If you like the look of the Peugeot 308, consider the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf or Vauxhall Astra, all of which are available in hatchback and estate formats.
Used Peugeot 308 cars are available on finance, but the costs will depend on the price of the specific model you choose and the type of finance.

Because the 308 shares many of its components with the Citroen C4 and Vauxhall Astra, it offers strong levels of reliability and shouldn’t let you down.
The 308 also comes with a range of standard safety features.
We’d say so, yes. The Peugeot 308 offers great levels of practicality thanks to its large boot, a great choice of engine options, and good styling.
Models from 2016 received Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity to make it easier when you wish to use your phone’s sat-nav or listen to music.
We think the Peugeot 308 would make a great family car because it looks cool (so your kids won’t get embarrassed), it's reliable, has a big boot to store lots of stuff, and comes with Isofix child seat mounting points in the rear.
