Range Rover P550e
While it may sit in the luxury SUV category, a Range Rover is still built to tackle and withstand some serious off-road abuse, and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) P550e is no different.
Even with its 71-mile all-electric range, this Range Rover Autobiography has a highly advanced four-wheel drive system. And it has air suspension, which can be raised when doing a spot of green-laning or tackling a muddy road.
There are plenty of options available too, so it’ll be easy to find your perfect spec.

Toyota Land Cruiser MHEV
The Toyota Land Cruiser has seen many different iterations over the years, but in its latest guise, it brings 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) power to its 2.8-litre diesel engine.
While a MHEV system may not have as much range as other hybrid types, it does help with overall efficiency, bringing around 30mpg.
It’s also incredibly capable off-road, so much so that it’s been dubbed the best since the Land Cruiser came out in the 1950s.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
When you think of a Jeep, your mind probably goes straight to the Wrangler, with its iconic shape and chunky tyres.
And while we don’t get the hybrid version here in the UK, we do have the larger and more luxurious Grand Cherokee 4xe.
This is a PHEV good for a claimed 97.4mpg and 30 miles of electric-only range. Being a Jeep, it’s not afraid of off-roading, and in fact can handle most trails with ease, despite being far heavier than its Renegade and Wrangler relatives.

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in
It might not be as capable as a Land Cruiser off-road, but not much else is. What the Toyota RAV4 does have though is refinement and a body shape that’s ideal for adventurous families.
If it’s hybridity you’re after, we’d recommend the Plug-in version which gets a claimed 282.4mpg* and 46 miles of electric-only driving.
Thanks to its four-wheel drive system, it’s very capable and suitable for rougher terrains now and again.
*This is based on electric range, so in the real world, you can expect around 60mpg.

Subaru Forester
Like a lot of popular models, the Subaru Forester has also transitioned into an SUV from an estate car, bringing a higher driving position and added comfort.
It’s also not half bad off the beaten track, thanks to Subaru’s longstanding history of successful rally cars.
The system in the Forester is a self-charging hybrid one, which means you never need to plug it in, but still get up to 40mpg.
)
Hyundai Santa Fe
Want the coolest-looking 4x4 outside the school gates? Then you should probably consider the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV.
It’s designed to suit a proper outdoors-y lifestyle with seven seats a 621-litre boot and space for a roof tent on the roof. No, seriously.
The hybrid unit is spot-on too, getting up to 34 miles on electric range alone, and a claimed 41mpg.

Land Rover Defender P400e
The king of the trail is the Land Rover Defender – there’s no denying it.
When production of the old shape ended, fans were worried for the future. But what the new design brought is comfort (since the old one had none) and continued the Defender’s famed reputation as a proper off-road vehicle.
The new shape has also introduced a plug-in hybrid version denoted by the ‘e’ in the name. This gets 27 miles of electric driving and a claimed 85.3mpg from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.

Range Rover Sport P460e
If you like the standard Range Rover but want a sporty edge, it’s hard not to recommend the Range Rover Sport – a proper performance SUV that can tackle muddy roads with ease.
We’d like to highlight the P460e plug-in hybrid version which still gets 460hp and a 0-62mph time of just 5.3 seconds, alongside a real-world efficiency of around 40mpg.
It also still gets that advanced four-wheel drive system found in other Land Rovers, so you know it’ll always be able to get you out of a sticky situation.
