When it first launched in 2013, the Mercedes-Benz GLA arrived as a larger version of the already-popular A-Class and a smaller version of the GLC.   

Mercedes is well known for its luxurious and reliable cars, and the GLA is no exception. It hit a niche in the market for someone wanting a hatchback but with an SUV feel, and its higher driving position helps with this.

There are a few options for a Mercedes GLA depending on what you’re after, with the GLA Sport being a perfect starting option.

There's the AMG Line Premium Plus right at the top end of the range that offers two 10.25-inch screens on the dash, a classy interior, and loads of onboard features. Other trims include the Sport Edition, Sport, AMG Line, AMG and AMG S.

What features does the Mercedes-Benz GLA have?

Inside is where the GLA shines compared to its rivals. Mercedes has always known how to make a great car interior, and this is reflected in the luxury that's inside the GLA.  

Sharing most of its interior parts with the smaller A-Class, the GLA feels luxurious, comfortable and packed full of tech.

Standard kit includes a seven-inch MBUX infotainment system, a reversing camera and a great speaker system.  

Other options available on higher Sport Executive and AMG trims include a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, parking sensors, an upgraded sound system, AMG styling, interior ambient lighting strips, and a glass panoramic sunroof.   

The boot space is impressive too, offering more room than the A-Class on which it's based. The GLA has a 495-litre boot, meaning it should comfortably fit luggage for all four passengers.

When it comes to reliability, the Mercedes GLA isn't a car you'll need to worry about. It's built on Mercedes' precise production line which ensures quality, and is powered by some of the most dependable engines in the world.

Plus, it's safe too, scoring a full five stars following its most recent Euro NCAP safety test in 2019 where it proved impeccable safety for both adult and child occupants.

How much does the Mercedes-Benz GLA cost to run?

When buying your used Mercedes-Benz GLA, you can choose from either a petrol, diesel or hybrid engine.

The petrol engines are included with the GLA 180, GLA 200 and GLA 250 models. The two lower models are powered by a 1.3-litre engine that produces 135hp and 163hp respectively.  

The diesel engines on offer are based on a 2.0-litre unit in the form of the GLA 200d and GLA 220d. These are better for longer journeys or for those who might wish to tow a trailer.  

Last but not least is Mercedes’ proudest addition to the GLA lineup: the GLA 250e hybrid unit, which is mated to a 1.3-litre petrol engine. This produces a combined 218hp and is ideal for those living in towns or cities where all-electric power makes sense.   

Who is the Mercedes-Benz GLA suitable for?

You should buy a used Mercedes GLA if you need a small SUV with hatchback-like proportions. This means a vehicle that's easy to park and live with on a daily basis but that's also easy to see out of, with plenty of practicality.
