7 quirky things we love about these Chinese cars

From guitar strings in the doors to being able to swim, these are what we love about these new Chinese cars

Modern cars need more ways to stand out. With the vast number of new cars launching, it can be difficult to make an impact, which is why many new Chinese cars are arriving with some seriously cool features.

Whether it’s the MG Cyberster’s scissor doors or the Denza B8’s roof-mounted drone, we’re not short of exciting options.

Here are some of our favourite quirky features you can find on some Chinese cars.

  • BYD rotating screen

  • Yangwang U8 swimming

  • Denza B8 roof drone

  • BYD ATTO 3 guitar strings

  • Geely EX5 under-seat drawer

  • JAECOO 7 540-degree camera

  • MG Cyberster scissor doors

Quirky Chinese car features

BYD rotating screen

BYD ATTO 3 screen in portrait modeBYD cars aren’t short of attention-grabbing headlines with attractive prices and good electric ranges, but another thing they offered was 90-degree rotating touchscreens.

These were stopped in late 2025, but if you buy a used BYD made before then, you’ll likely have one.

So, it doesn’t matter whether you prefer portrait or landscape because it can do both. Just note that Apple CarPlay only works in landscape mode.

Yangwang U8 swimming

A white SUV navigates through shallow, swirling water, showcasing its capability to drive in wet conditions.

The Yangwang U8 is BYD’s answer to the Land Rover Defender, but with 1,186hp and loads more tech.

One of these features is its ability to turn into a massive floating device in the event that you suddenly find yourself in water.

As soon as it senses you’ve driven into water, Emergency Floating Mode activates, shutting down the engine, raising the suspension, closing the windows, opening the sunroof and displaying water depth and vehicle position on the central control screen.

Plus, it can do a tank turn on the spot, just in case that was ever useful.

Denza B8 roof drone

Silver SUV with black trim parked on a flat, moon-like surface. Large tires and sleek design set against a sky featuring a prominent moon.Isn’t it annoying being stuck in traffic with no sign of it moving? Well, BYD’s premium Denza brand has thought about this.

Introducing the Denza B8 and its roof-mounted drone, which means you can film your own car from the sky as you drive along or use it to see what’s ahead.

Legalities would vary across different markets, and it’s not currently in the UK, but it would be very handy on the M25 at rush hour, don’t you think?

BYD ATTO 3 guitar strings

BYD ATTO 3 cabinAnother feature that could make traffic more tolerable is the BYD ATTO 3’s built-in guitar strings.

These are fitted to the inside of each door and are made up of three bass guitar strings, playing the following notes: G, B-flat and C.

This means you can attempt to play the bass lines of popular songs, such as Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust or Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water.

Geely EX5 under-seat drawer

Car interior with a rear seat storage drawer containing headphones, a camera, and a wallet, under light gray perforated leather seats.Family life can get very hectic at times, which is why the Geely EX5 comes with some clever storage solutions to help.

The best is its under-seat drawer, which slides out from below the rear seats, giving you more space to tuck things away.

It’s big enough for items such as a DSLR camera, headphones and a glasses case, so do with that size what you will.

JAECOO 7 540-degree camera

JAECOO 7 cabinMost cars come with 360-degree parking cameras these days, but the JAECOO 7 takes it up a notch with a 540-degree one.

How does that work? It's simple. It shows angles all around the car, including underneath.

This is especially helpful when off-road or parking. The last thing you want to do is let something touch the underside of your car, or for your tyres to roll over anything fluffy and cat-shaped.

MG Cyberster scissor doors

MG CybersterFitting scissor doors to sports cars isn’t a new concept. In fact, the first use can be traced back to 1968 with the Alfa Romeo Carabo.

But it’s very rare you find them on A) an electric car and B) one that doesn’t cost more than £100,000. But MG has done just that with the Cyberster.

And as if it wasn’t unique enough, you operate these doors using a button on the inside and outside. Door handles are so 2010... apparently.
