The best small four-doors
Vauxhall Corsa
You’ll find a lot of the cars on this list will be cult classics, and that starts with the iconic Vauxhall Corsa.
We know the Corsa has a reputation for being a bit of a ‘boy-racer’ car, but it’s also massively practical.
The boot is 309 litres, so very slightly larger than the Ford Fiesta, and the rear seating is surprisingly roomy.
From the 2025 models, you’ll find the 100hp Turbo to be the best on fuel. Expect up to 54.3mpg from the manual model – so ideal for a daily driver.
Toyota Yaris
The Toyota Yaris has a hard time doing anything wrong. It’s dependable, comfortable and frugal all-round – so a top pick for the best small four-door cars.
Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, said: “We could sum the Yaris up in two words: ‘low’, and ‘very’. As in ‘low’ running costs, and ‘very’ reliable.”
A 1.5-litre hybrid model from 2025 will get you up to 68.9mpg. There hasn’t been a diesel offering for some time, but you won’t miss it with efficiency stats that good.
Skoda Fabia
A used Skoda Fabia is an ideal pick for a small four-door car if you like an Audi A1 but can’t justify the price. The Fabia is more cost-effective in all areas – if you’re happy to give up the Audi badge.
The most readily available Fabia engines are the two petrol offerings. There’s a 1.0-litre that offers up to 55.5mpg, and a 1.5-litre that goes up to 51.1mpg.
It’s one of the roomier options, with the estate-like roofline offering loads of rear space.
Renault Clio
The Renault Clio is a worthy alternative to the Corsa if you like a proper hatchback feel.
You’ll get two engine options – petrol and petrol hybrid. The Clio E-Tech hybrid challenges the petrol with up to 67.3mpg vs. 54.3mpg.
Most people know the petrol Clio, and that one will get you a 391-litre boot.
If you shift to the hybrid (and it’s worth it for those fuel savings), you’ll drop to 301 litres to make space for the extra batteries.
Citroen e-C3
How about one of the best small four-door car picks – but electric? The Citroen e-C3 is a battery-powered option that’s spacious yet compact.
The 199-mile range will cover every day driving for most motorists, and the e-Routes planner on the MyCitroen App can help you plan journeys to include charging points.
The high driving position is perfect for comfort and visibility, while the interior is modern and packed with tech like the Head-Up display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen.
Volkswagen Polo
You can’t really go wrong with a Volkswagen Polo. It’s a crowd-pleaser – spacious enough for families, compact enough for new drivers, and comfortable enough for an older crowd.
It’s a safe car, scoring a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and is a real easy drive.
Sam said: “Its suspension glides over most bumps without fuss, the seats are comfy and the interior features lots of plush materials.”
Plus, you get a 351-litre boot at the back that beats the Corsa.
Hyundai i20
For a reliable and great value small car with four doors, the Hyundai i20 is a good bet.
It places high up on reliability surveys for small cars, and chatter in the forums is positive.
You can find the mild-hybrid i20 on the used market, but the brand only sells petrol engines brand-new as of 2025. The all-petrol 1.0-litre gets up to 53.2mpg, so it’s still efficient.
There’s also a spacious boot at the rear that will be 326 litres for the older models and 352 litres for the newer 2025 model.
