Start nowThe Mercedes CLA first came out in 2013 and arrived on the scene as a sleeker A-Class version of the larger C-Class. It was designed to appeal to those wanting a saloon or estate/shooting brake version of the A-Class hatchback, but who didn’t fancy the extra price and size of the C-Class.
Since it's fundamentally based on the brand's smallest hatchback, the CLA’s interior is reflective of its smaller sibling. This means that whichever generation interior the A-Class has, the CLA has the same – which is no bad thing because the A-Class has one of the best interiors you can get in a hatchback.
The CLA saw a big facelift in 2019, as did the A-Class, which introduced an all-new infotainment system and dual dashboard/gauge cluster screens.
Available trims include the Sport, AMG Line, AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus.

Inside is where the Mercedes CLA shines, because it has one of the best interiors in its class.
Mercedes has always been good at making industry-leading cabins, but the current shape A-Class and CLA models are on a different level.
Not only is the quality the best you will find anywhere else at that price, but the CLA is also packed full of great technology including dual displays in 2019 and newer models.
All versions get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard as well as a DAB radio, sat-nav and the brand’s 'Hey Mercedes' system, which is a hands-free way of controlling the car’s tech while driving.
In terms of space, thankfully the CLA comes in two different body styles – saloon and shooting brake. If you want more boot space, then you should opt for the latter, because its boot is 45 litres bigger than that of the standard saloon and 195 litres bigger than the boot found in an A-Class.
However, if passenger comfort is at the forefront of your needs then you should opt for the saloon because the sloped roofline of the CLA offers slightly less rear-seat headroom.
Mercedes doesn't take half-measures when it comes to building a reliable vehicle. In fact, they take it very seriously which is why the CLA is such a dependable car. Due to its strong build quality and bulletproof engines, a used CLA will be good for many miles along with regular servicing.
Being targeted at families, the CLA is also very safe, with a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating with exceptional protection for both adult and child occupants.
Like with most Mercedes models, there are plenty of petrol engine options to choose from, as well as one diesel engine variant that's the better choice for those wanting to go on longer motorway journeys and less around town.
The entry-level petrol engine is called the CLA180, which is a 1.3-litre turbocharged engine that produces 135hp. The next step up is the CLA200, which produces 163hp and is better for those seeking a little bit more performance.
There are now a few other variants on the scene, including a hybrid with a 15kWh battery and an AMG CLA 45 S performance variant, but these are rarer to find on the used market.
You should buy a used Mercedes-Benz CLA if you're in the market for a sleek saloon or shooting brake that's practical, fuel-efficient and quick. It's the perfect all-rounder before you get to an estate car or larger SUV.
Rivalling models include the Audi A5, Volkswagen Arteon and Peugeot 508.
