BYD
SEALION 7
Use our Help Me Choose tool to go from 1000s of cars to just a handful of recommendations — and cinch your search.
There’s only one type of SEALION 7, and it’s an electric coupé SUV designed to take on some real heavy hitters in this part of the market.
But it’s got a lot going for it, with all-wheel drive and performance editions as well as a lot of really impressive tech.
Popular BYD SEALION trims
Three BYD SEALION 7 models are for sale with your choice of rear- or all-wheel drive and an optional bigger battery for maximum range.
> BYD SEALION 7 Comfort – this is the base model, but with 300 miles of range, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 360-degree parking camera, a panoramic sunroof and a premium Dynaudio sound system, it’s certainly not basic
> BYD SEALION 7 Design AWD – AWD primarily adds performance, with 0-62mph done in 4.5 seconds, but you also get more grip and fancy 20-inch alloy wheels
> BYD SEALION 7 Excellence AWD – you get a bigger battery for 312 miles of range, but also soft Nappa leather and a head-up display
BYD SEALION 7 history
It's still a pretty new car, but it's proven a hit among electric SUV buyers.
> BYD SEALION 7 (2024) – announced in late 2024 and hitting UK roads by early 2025, it’s considered the SUV equivalent to the SEAL saloon
The SEALION 7 really isn’t short on kit, with a tick in the box for most features across most trim levels.
Some highlights include a panoramic sunroof with an electric sunshade, a powered boot lid, electrically adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, a heated steering wheel, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver’s display, keyless entry and vehicle-to-load (V2L).
On the safety front, you’ve got all-round sensors and cameras, as well as adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert and door opening warning.
In fact, the only things you don’t get across the entire range are a head-up display, leather seats and the biggest alloys.
Let’s also not forget about the 520-litre boot and the 58-litre storage area under the bonnet.
Certainly. Being an electric model, there’s not a lot moving in the first place to go wrong. This is the same with any EV.
But you’ve also got BYD’s impressive Blade battery tech, which is durable in the event of a collision and well-protected against regular charging.
As for the car itself, you’ve got a six-year/93,750-mile vehicle warranty and an eight-year/125,000-mile battery warranty.
Most models come with an 82.5kWh battery with 283-300 miles of range, with the top-spec model getting a bigger 91.3kWh pack and 312 miles of range.
While efficiency may be average, remember that access to off-peak charging at home can really reduce your running costs compared with a similarly sized petrol SUV.
This stylish coupé SUV is perfect for families who want the practicality of an SUV without the rugged looks – it’s far more similar to a sporty car than an off-roader, which appeals around town and on the motorway.
It’s designed to take on the Tesla Model Y, but other alternatives like the MG IM6 and the Volkswagen ID.5 also exist.
A new BYD SEALION 7 costs around £47,000 to £60,000, which is broadly in line with competition like the Tesla Model Y.
Simply multiply the battery size by your unit rate. An 82.5kWh battery with a 7.5p tariff would cost £6.19 to fully charge. The bigger 91.3kWh battery on the same tariff would cost £6.85.
The AWD models manage 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, which is far quicker than your average SUV. At 6.7 seconds, even the slowest SEALION 7 is plenty quick enough.
