ID.5

Start nowThe Volkswagen ID.5 is a coupé version of the regular ID.4 SUV, but it’s only available with the bigger battery and more powerful motors offered in the ID.4.
Popular Volkswagen ID.5 trims
Volkswagen went from offering ID-only trim levels like Tech and Max to offering more familiar VW levels, like Match. There’s also a performance GTX model.
> Volkswagen ID.5 Tech - early entry-level car with matrix LED headlights, three-zone climate control and a powered bootlid. There's also the Tech Pro
> Volkswagen ID.5 Max - primarily style-focused with large 20-inch alloys, sports seats and dynamic chassis control. Also consider the Max Pro
> Volkswagen ID.5 Match - standard pick in the updated range, including keyless entry and reversing camera
Volkswagen ID.5 history
The Volkswagen ID.5 was introduced in late 2021, several months after its more conventional ID.4 sibling.
> Volkswagen ID.5 (2021) - almost identical to the ID.4, with the exception of the sloping rear roofline
> Volkswagen ID.5 software update (2022) - free software 3.0 was released, introducing promising tech upgrades to the laggy infotainment system
There’s no such thing as a poorly equipped VW ID.5. All used Volkswagen ID.5 cars come with matrix LED headlights, 3D-effect LED tail lights, an electric boot lid, three-zone climate control, an augmented reality head-up display and electrically adjustable seats with massage functionality.
All ID.5 models also come with the bigger 77kWh battery promising a range of just over 300 miles.
You can’t get this ID.4’s smaller 52kWh battery in this sporty model, which is good news, because its real-world range is much closer to 150 miles.
Early reports highlight the Volkswagen ID.5’s dependable performance, minimal maintenance needs, and strong warranty support.
As an electric model, it has fewer moving parts than a petrol car, so there’s less to go wrong. Add to that the fact that it uses tried-and-tested VW parts from other ID models and it can only be good news.
Because of its aerodynamic shape, Volkswagen reckons the ID.5 can travel slightly further between charges than the ID.4, though it won’t be a massive step up in real-world conditions.
Still, a realistic range of around 250 miles, cheap servicing and middling insurance groupings help balance this car’s slightly higher purchase price.
Coupé-SUVs have gained popularity in recent years, and a used Volkswagen ID.5 for sale is a great pick for anyone who already has their eye on something like a BMW X4 or Mercedes GLC Coupé.
The ID.5 and the ID.4 are pretty much the same size, so they won’t feel that different to drive.
The key difference is that the ID.5 has slightly less rear headroom thanks to the sloping roof, though it does manage around six litres more boot space.
Brand new, a Volkswagen ID.5 costs upwards of £45,000 – about £3,000 more than an entry-level ID.4.
The good news is that used VW ID.5 prices have already fallen below the £30,000.
Early models claimed around 310 miles, but small efficiency tweaks have edged this beyond 340 miles. In reality, expect between 250 and 300 miles, depending on the conditions.
The ID.5’s main competition comes from within the Volkswagen Group with the Skoda Enyaq Coupé, which is mechanically very similar. Other stylish electric SUVs include the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y.
The size difference between an ID.5 and a Tiguan isn’t as big as you might expect – the ID.5 may be 6cm longer than the latest Tiguan, but it’s both narrower and lower.
