The beauty of a BMW plug-in hybrid car is that it offers electric power alongside a trusty combustion engine for added flexibility, performance and efficiency.  

They deliver lower emissions and significant fuel savings, making them environmentally friendly, and the electric motors allow for short, all-electric trips.  

Then, on longer journeys, the combustion engine ensures you have the range and power needed, even when the PHEV battery dies. 

BMW PHEV vs. hybrid vs. MHEV

So, what’s the difference between a BMW plug-in hybrid (PHEV), a full self-charging hybrid and a mild hybrid (MHEV)? 

Well, a PHEV allows you to drive 100% on electric power for a certain distance, up to 63 miles in the case of the BMW 3 Series. But you do need to keep the battery topped up by manually plugging it in. 

Whereas a self-charging hybrid means you never need to plug it in, but you still get access to its more efficient nature, with over 50mpg in some cases. 

Mild hybrids, on the other hand, mean the car runs as a petrol or diesel all of the time, but has a little help from a much smaller battery, which aids engine startups and crawling at very slow speeds. 

BMW plug-in hybrid technology

BMW's plug-in hybrid technology combines a high-performance electric motor with one of its TwinPower Turbo engines, allowing the vehicle to operate in all-electric mode for short trips and switch to the combustion engine for longer journeys.  

This dual powertrain setup reduces emissions and fuel consumption, making it an eco-friendly option. 

The electric motor is powered by a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which can be charged externally via home or faster public chargers.  

Additionally, regenerative braking technology captures any added energy during deceleration and stores it in the battery to use when needed.  

Plus, you get access to the My BMW App, which provides real-time information on charging status, range and energy consumption, so you can always keep up to date with how your car (and wallet) is doing. 

BMW plug-in hybrid running costs

BMW plug-in hybrid cars for sale generally offer lower running costs compared to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.  

One of the main savings is reduced fuel consumption, especially for short commutes where the electric motor can handle most of the driving. For instance, the BMW 530e can achieve up to 201mpg under optimal conditions, relying firmly on the battery. 

Maintenance costs are also lower due to fewer moving parts in the electric motor and regenerative braking systems that reduce wear on brake components. 

While insurance premiums for plug-in hybrids can be on the higher end, they can be lower. This depends entirely on the car and the driver.

How does BMW xDrive work in PHEV?

Ordinarily, the engine and electric motors will split the power between the front wheels and rear wheels in a 40:60 ratio. But if xDrive thinks one wheel needs more power than another, it’ll make sure to do it automatically. 

How do you charge a BMW plug-in hybrid?

The same as any other plug-in hybrid. When the battery is low, open the charge flap and plug it into a home wall box charger or a faster public charger.
