Start nowAbarth has many years of experience when it comes to tuning Fiat’s cars for performance, and the Abarth 595 is an excellent example of this done right.
The Fiat 500 on which this is based is already a highly desirable model with a personable interior, but while that model’s focus is efficiency, the Abarth 595 has some seriously impressive stats.
The 595 features an entirely new exhaust system that transforms the noise, making you think a much more expensive supercar is among the traffic.
Power comes from a 1.4-litre petrol engine, which in most cases produces 165hp. That’s not a lot, but in a car this light, it’s a seriously quick offering.
Popular Abarth 595 trims
Trim levels on the used Abarth 595 for sale are generally centred around adding more style and power, rather than equipment.
> Abarth 595 - Standard specification with similar levels of equipment to a high Fiat 500 trim level
> Abarth 595 Turismo - Popular upgrade with an even sportier look
> Abarth 595 Competizione - More powerful variant with upgraded 180hp engine

Abarth 595 history
Abarth has been tuning the Fiat 500 pretty much since it relaunched in 2009, so there are plenty of models to pick from.
> First-generation Abarth 500 (2009) - Sporty model based on the relaunched Fiat 500
> Facelifted Abarth 595 (2012) - The 500 becomes the 595, with an even more aggressive style
> Facelifted Abarth 595 (2016) - More powerful engine options and new trim
Other than the impressive exhaust note and punchy engine options, the 595 is also pleasant inside.
The Abarth 595 balances a fairly stripped-out look (designed to put the driver’s focus on the road) with good levels of car tech, so you still get a good infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, depending on model year.
Other than the tech, you get some sporty upgrades like a flat-bottomed steering wheel, sports seats, a redesigned instrument cluster, and some coloured trims.
You don’t really buy a car like this for its boot space, but at least it has the same 185-litre space as the regular Fiat 500.
Being so closely related to the popular Fiat 500, the 595 should be as reliable as its relative. Of course, most parts are Fiat – it's just the odd few that are Abarth. And even so, the powerful Abarth engine was still developed under Fiat’s guidance.
If you drive this car enthusiastically, you could easily see fuel economy figures plummet, but fortunately, because it’s so light, there’s also the potential for fairly respectable running costs if you’re more gentle with the throttle.
A used Abarth 595 for sale targets a very specific audience, comprising primarily hot hatch and sports car enthusiasts. It’s at home around the city, but it’s just as capable on longer motorway trips, too.
Other similar sporty cars include the MINI Cooper S, the Suzuki Swift Sport, and the Ford Fiesta ST.
As it’s based on the Fiat 500, the ‘595’ signifies that it’s an improved, sportier version of the Italian city car.
There are three different power options for the 595, starting with the 145hp Trofeo trim. This is followed by the 160hp Turismo trim and the most powerful 180hp Competizione trim.
Abarth makes the 595, which is based on the very popular Fiat 500 city car. The 595, however, features a tuned engine, louder exhaust and cooler looks.
The 595 is a very safe car – the Fiat 500 on which it's based scored very highly in its Euro NCAP crash testing, and there's no reason why the Abarth would be any different.
The main difference is that the Fiat 500 is a bog-standard everyday city car and the 595 is a sportier, more hardcore hot hatchback that offers great driver involvement and handling.
