MG3
Use our Help Me Choose tool to go from 1000s of cars to just a handful of recommendations — and cinch your search.
Start nowThe MG 3 is technically a supermini, or small hatchback, and while its price matches that class, the interior space is actually pretty impressive with plenty of head and shoulder room.
You’re limited to a 1.5-litre petrol engine, but it balances performance and economy pretty well, and matches what you’d expect from slightly smaller turbocharged engines from other rival models.
Standard kit is good, especially on newer models, which come with a touchscreen infotainment system and all the essentials you’d need.
Popular MG 3 trims
If you’re looking at newer models, there are only two trim levels to choose, and the top-spec model is great value for money.
> MG 3 Excite - Entry-level car with Apple CarPlay and reversing sensors
> MG 3 Exclusive - High-spec variant with reversing camera and cruise control

MG 3 history
The MG 3 has been around since 2011, and with the exception of some minor upgrades, is mainly unchanged.
> First-generation MG 3 (2010) - Affordable compact hatchback with emphasis on value for money
> Facelifted MG 3 (2018) - Front-end redesign and improved interior with more car tech and standard equipment
> Second-generation MG 3 (2024) - Considerable modernisation and introduction of new hybrid option
Inside, the MG 3 is very well equipped for its class and price. Every model comes as standard with an eight-inch touchscreen that is Apple CarPlay-compatible. There's also Bluetooth, USB and aux inputs and electric windows as standard on the entry-level Excite model.
As you move up the model range to the Exclusive, you will find extras such as sports seats, cruise control, a reversing camera and a better sound system.
The 285-litre boot is pretty average for this size of car, but it’s deep and should be fairly capable of taking larger loads, especially with the rear seats folded down.
MG is a very up-and-coming brand, and has been focusing its attention on building budget-friendly models that don’t mean you have to compromise on quality and car tech. MG is owned by China’s SAIC Motor, which produces a number of other vehicles, so it has the backing of plenty of investment.
Unless you’re looking at a brand new model, most used MG 3 cars come with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. It’s not turbocharged like some other smaller cars, but it should still be reasonably efficient both around town and on the motorway.
A used MG 3 for sale is a great small car for anybody living in and around town, because it’s spacious enough for the whole family but it’s still compact enough to be at home around the side streets. It’s an affordable model that comes with all the basics and a few other bits, so has plenty of appeal.
You may also want to consider cars like the Dacia Sandero and other household names like the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.
The MG3 is good for longer motorway drives despite being a smaller vehicle because it offers good mpg, is comfortable, and easy to drive.
The MG3 does not have a turbocharger, and instead offers a naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. If you want to get really nerdy, the Trophy Championship race car concept created to celebrate MG’s 90th anniversary featured a turbocharged version of this engine.
The MG3’s main rivals include the Ford Fiesta, Dacia Sandero, Citroen C3, and Mitsubishi Mirage.
The MG3 is a cheap car to run and to insure, is fuel efficient, and offers plenty of reliability.
