Volkswagen Tiguan buying guide
What types of used Volkswagen Tiguan cars are there?
The Volkswagen Tiguan is a family SUV with five seats and a good-sized boot. A separate seven-seat model is available, badged the Tiguan Allspace, but that’s sold as a different model altogether despite being very similar mechanically.
Popular Volkswagen Tiguan trims
Although Volkswagen tends to use the same trim level names across the range, the company has changed these a few times over the years. Below are some examples.
> Volkswagen Tiguan SE - the Tiguan SE is a mid-spec car with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, three-zone climate control, cruise control and all-round parking sensors
> Volkswagen Tiguan SEL - the Tiguan SEL is a high-spec car with heated front seats, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, digital instrument cluster and panoramic sunroof
> Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line - the Tiguan R-Line has the same kit as SEL with more aggressive styling and sports suspension
Volkswagen Tiguan history
Volkswagen launched the Tiguan in 2007, half a decade after the Touareg, in response to the growing family SUV market.
> Second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan (2016) - seriously stylish upgrade over the predecessor, with a high-quality finish and lots of equipment
> Volkswagen Tiguan facelift (2021) - styling enhancements, revisions to trim levels and introduction of a plug-in hybrid model
> Third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan (2024) - modern redesign with a high-tech, minimalist interior
What features does the Volkswagen Tiguan have?
When it first launched, the second-generation Tiguan came as standard with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic lights and wipers and an electronic parking brake, but you had to upgrade for things like an electronic climate control system, smartphone mirroring and all-round parking sensors.
By the time the facelifted model came in 2021, entry-level Life versions were sold with adaptive cruise control, climate control and smartphone mirroring as standard.
Top-spec equipment and optional extras worth looking out for include heated rear seats, keyless entry, a reversing camera, a self-parking system and a system designed to make reversing a trailer easier.
Is the Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Yes, Volkswagen has an excellent track record for building reliable and dependable cars, and the Tiguan makes for a strong-performing, long-lasting SUV.
Despite its size, it shares many of its mechanical parts, including the engines, gearboxes and drive systems, with many other VW models, so you can be sure that any used VW Tiguan will be tried and tested.
How much does the Volkswagen Tiguan cost to run?
Many Tiguan cars were sold with 2.0-litre diesel engines, typically with around 150-200hp, so they’re punchy enough but still deliver on the fuel economy front.
Expect around 40mpg from a front-wheel-drive model, or 35mpg from a four-wheel-drive car, with mixed driving.
Petrol models might not be so economical, but they’re cheaper to buy and fuel, so can be a better pick for those doing shorter distances.
For the best efficiency, consider a plug-in hybrid model which will do around 20-30 miles on electric before calling on the petrol engine.
Who is the Volkswagen Tiguan suitable for?
A used Volkswagen Tiguan for sale is a great pick for adventurous families who need lots of space and practicality, a comfortable and safe ride, strong off-roading, towing performance, and a high-quality finish.
It’s a fairly upmarket, premium family SUV, but it’s still cheaper to buy than the BMW X3, which makes a used Tiguan very accessible.
Other family SUVs include the mechanically similar Skoda Kodiaq or Kia Sportage. You might be tempted by other VW cars like the VW T-Cross.
Should I buy a Volkswagen Tiguan?
Which model is the best Tiguan?
Most engines are well-suited to the Tiguan, but we would focus our search on a 2.0-litre diesel with the smooth-shifting DSG automatic gearbox. Search for a high-spec model for all the bells and whistles, which really sets this SUV apart from the rest.
Are Tiguans good on fuel?
If you’re moving from a hatchback, you may notice a slight dip in fuel economy, but the Volkswagen Tiguan is about as economical as any other family SUV.
Do VW Tiguans hold their value?
Yes, Volkswagen is known for its strong build quality, which helps it retain more value than some brands. You might pay more for a Tiguan, but you’d hope it’d hold onto its value when it comes time to sell it, too.
Is a VW Tiguan a luxury car?
BMW, Mercedes and Audi are typically considered the three most common mainstream luxury brands, but VW does a good job of bridging the gap between these and more affordable brands. The Tiguan gets lots of high-tech features, but they’re reserved for top-spec models for the most part.
How many miles can you expect to get out of a VW Tiguan?
Expect around 500-600 miles per tank from the mid-range diesel models, when driven economically. The higher-powered cars, including the bi-turbo diesel, and most of the petrols, might be closer to 400-500 miles.
