What types of Volkswagen hatchbacks are there?

Volkswagen has one of the most extensive range of models out there, including a number of hatchbacks, but its SUV and estate models also have that all-important hatchback-style boot opening if you’re after additional practicality.

On the conventional hatchback front, you can have the regular family hatchback or a smaller and more manageable supermini – both are available in hot hatch form with uprated power, and there’s even an electric model.

Popular Volkswagen hatchbacks

The Volkswagen Golf is one of the best-selling cars of all time. In the UK, it’s a firm favourite among new car buyers but a used VW Golf is also one of the most traded cars on the second-hand market.

It has petrol, diesel, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains as well as high-performance editions. Some used Golfs even have an electric motor, but this car was phased out and replaced by the ID-branded family.

What are Volkswagen hatchbacks like to drive?

Driving a used Volkswagen hatchback should be effortless – the steering is precise, the suspension is comfortable and fuel efficiency is rather high.

Some models, including performance GTI, GTD and GTD cars, plus the electric ID.3, can feel exceptionally quick behind the wheel, so if you’re not quite ready to give up the fun despite having a young family, a VW hatchback for sale makes a lot of sense.

Is VW Golf a hatchback?

Yes, the VW Golf is a hatchback. It’s also available in estate form for more boot space.

Is there a Passat hatchback?

The Passat is a saloon, which means the boot opening is fairly narrow despite the huge amount of space hidden within.

There is an estate version, and ninth-generation Passats sold from 2023 onwards are estate only. The estate boot opening is much wider and more akin to a hatchback.

Is an Arteon a hatchback?

Despite its slick, coupé-like saloon shape, the Arteon has five doors in both saloon and estate formats, so it’s very similar to a hatchback despite not being an actual hatchback.
