History of OMODA

Owned by Chery, OMODA became its own brand in 2022 when it launched in the Russian market – similar to how Lexus belongs to Toyota. Since then, it’s launched across a handful of Central American and European markets too.

Its cars are mainly rebadged Chery models that are available in China, so the cars already existed or evolved from predecessors before the OMODA brand came to the UK.

The OMODA 7 is the company’s first unique car that hasn’t been derived from another Chery model.

Standout OMODA features

OMODA cars have a very distinctive look slightly reminiscent of the fourth-generation Hyundai Tuscon, with a large, bold grille and ‘OMODA’ lettering at the end of the bonnet.

Its SUVs also have aerodynamic designs to help reduce wind resistance and improve efficiency, which is good news for its petrol and electric models.

All models get plenty of tech, as you’d expect in the 2020s, such as Apple CarPlay and wireless phone charging.

Through a combination of expressing its commitment to reliability and wanting to reassure British buyers, OMODA sells its cars with a seven-year warranty, just like Kia and MG.

The Chinese manufacturer also impressed the UK market with a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating on the first model it sold here, the OMODA 5.

Driving an OMODA

OMODA cars are very easy to drive because they’re automatics – just like many other cars on sale today, which have ditched the manual gearbox.

The petrol-powered car uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox for smooth gear changes, but the electric model has a standard single-speed gearbox just like most other electric cars.

All your driver information, like speed and efficiency, is displayed on a nice, large digital instrument cluster next to the touchscreen infotainment system.

The electric model feels more spritely because of the motor’s near-instant throttle response. It has a 204hp motor and a 61kWh battery which promises 257 miles of range between charges.

Popular used OMODA cars

When the brand first launched in the UK, the 5 and E5 were the only OMODA for sale. The E5 is just the electric version of the 5 – a compact family SUV.

Some more models are planned for the future, including others from OMODA’s sister company and fellow Chery-owned brand JAECOO.
