Start nowThe Nissan Leaf is a mid-sized hatchback that makes for a great family car – small enough for around town, but comfy enough for longer trips.
Nissan is a Japanese brand known for building highly reliable cars, and there’s enough data to suggest that batteries used in its electric cars should last a long time.

There are also two battery and electric motor configurations to pick from.
Popular Nissan Leaf trims
A Nissan Leaf comes with a few different trim options, giving you plenty of choices based on your wants and needs.
> Nissan Leaf Shiro – entry-level model gets 17-inch alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a six-speaker sound system
> Nissan Leaf Accenta – slight step-up, you get automatic climate control, multifunctional leather steering wheel and an eight-inch touchscreen
> Nissan Leaf N-Connecta – increasing luxury and comfort, it gets a heated steering wheel, 360-degree parking camera and privacy rear glass
> Nissan Leaf Tekna – top-spec model with a Bose sound system, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and go, plus Nissan’s e-Pedal system
Nissan Leaf history
The Nissan Leaf is a pioneer in the world of used electric cars, launching back in 2010 and still going strong.
> First-generation Nissan Leaf (2010-2017) - the world’s first mainstream battery electric vehicle, and is still just as popular as it was then
> Second-generation Nissan Leaf (2017-present) - tweaking the formula is all Nissan had to do, adding more tech and range
Standard kit and trim levels vary depending on the model year, but even some older low-spec models come with keyless entry, cruise control and a reversing camera.
It’s still well worth scouting out a higher trim level for added luxuries, like all-around parking sensors, heated seats and a heated steering wheel, though.
High-spec models add even more, like heated seats in the rear, upgraded audio and a 360-degree parking camera, and they’re reasonably affordable, too.
Every used Nissan Leaf for sale comes with a Type 2 port for charging at home and the less common CHAdeMO port for rapid charging (most other cars use a CCS connection).
Not only is Nissan known for building reliable and long-lasting cars, but it’s also one of the most experienced brands at building electric cars.
Plus, it always helps that there’s generally less to go wrong with electric cars, so they’re often more dependable than a petrol or diesel.
Although there are two battery sizes, all versions of the Nissan Leaf for sale should be equally as efficient – a bigger battery just means you can travel for longer between charges.
If you have access to a home charging point with off-peak rates, you could seriously reduce your running costs.
The Nissan Leaf is a good middle ground – it’s a hatchback that’s great for families, company drivers, and solo drivers alike.
It combines a reasonably compact exterior with good levels of interior space, making it nice and versatile.
Rivalling models include the Hyundai Kona, BMW i3 and Kia Niro.
The Leaf's range depends on the model you opt for, but entry-level models offer up to 149 miles of range, while top-spec Tekna e+ models offer up to 239 miles of all-electric range.
The Nissan Leaf has a range of 149 to 249 miles depending on the model you choose, and EV batteries are expected to last up to at least 100,000 miles.
The Tekna e+ model has the longest range in the Nissan Leaf range, promising up to 249 miles on a single charge. This could be more or less depending on how you drive the vehicle.
Electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf are built to last and can travel over 100,000 miles without needing to replace the battery. This is more miles than most average cars do in their lifetime.
You can charge a Nissan Leaf at home using a wallbox charger or by plugging into the mains. A 7kWh wall charger can return a full charge in 7.5 hours, or a 50kWh fast charger will take around 1.5 hours to charge from 20% to 80%.
