Use our Help Me Choose tool to go from 1000s of cars to just a handful of recommendations — and cinch your search.
Start nowThe MG5 (2020-present) recently had a facelift and now looks much more futuristic and fits with the rest of the brand’s line-up such as the updated MG ZS EV.
Being one of, if not, the cheapest electric estate cars money can buy, they’re in hot demand.
Step inside the MG5 and you may be surprised at how affordable it is because the interior is just so stylish..
From the soft-touch materials to its large 10.25-inch central display, you’d think you’re sitting in a much more expensive model from a German manufacturer.
Its best features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and its simplistic nature, with a clean dashboard and few buttons. There’s even a nifty little shelf under the central touchscreen where you can charge your phone.
As it’s an estate, you get a sizeable 578-litre boot that grows to 1,367 litres when the rear seats are folded flat. This means there’s plenty of space to store all your shopping or even the family pet.
Now that MG is Chinese-owned, it offers some of the best reliability of any electric car, thanks to SAIC Motors’ impressive attention to detail and solid build quality.
Every new MG comes with a seven-year factory warranty that can be transferred to subsequent owners, making used examples even more appealing.
On top of this, you can also add cinchCare to increase your vehicle’s overall protection by including a warranty, breakdown assistance and routine servicing.
At the time of writing, the MG5 hasn’t been independently safety tested by Euro NCAP but judging by other models in MG’s lineup, we don’t think there’s any need to worry.
The MG5 has safety features such as active emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic assist, high-beam headlight assistance and speed-limit assist.
Every MG5 model gets the same 156hp electric motor that’s mated to a 57kWh battery.
In standard SE trim, you get around 250 miles on a single charge, but opt for the more tech-filled Trophy and this is reduced to 235 miles.
Its maximum charging speed is 87kW, which gets you from 0-80% battery in just 35 minutes when using a fast charger. But equally, a home wall box charger is the best option to charge slowly overnight before your commute or road trip.
Historically, electric cars tend to be more expensive to insure than petrol and diesel cars because of their higher values and quicker acceleration.
However, the MG5 isn’t going to cost a fortune. It sits in between insurance groups 27 and 32 which is fairly reasonable – with the highest being group 50.
As we’ve touched on, MG is now a very dependable brand so maintenance costs shouldn’t be high for the MG5.
Since it’s electric, you can expect to spend even less because there are fewer moving parts than in an internal combustion engine.
A used MG5 is the sort of car best for a family. It’s practical, has plenty of range and is affordable to buy and run.
The MG5 would also be great for those who need a large boot for work or to ferry around a dog.
The cost to buy a used MG5 finance will depend on the specific model variant you pick, as prices will always vary across the range.
Our MG5 models are available on finance deals, giving you the option to spread the cost.
MG can make its electric estate so cheap because it’s simplistic and made cheaper in China.
The MG5 is a fantastic car that’s suitable for both families and working professionals.
No cars are cheap to fix per se, but in relative terms, MGs are more affordable to fix than some of its German rivals.
A new MG5 is cheap compared to other new EVs, with a starting price of around £30,000, but you could save up to £10,000 by grabbing one on the used car market .
