What types of used Lexus IS cars are there?

Sitting below the ES and LS models, the IS is the smallest executive saloon Lexus makes, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t pack a punch. 

This is a model that's been around since the late '90s and has been through many generations with many different engines, including a 5.0-lite V8 from the IS F and a diesel engine – both of which don’t exist in the current Lexus UK lineup as part of its bid to go fully electric. 

Instead, the IS can be had as either a hybrid or a turbocharged petrol – both of which are fantastic engines in their own right.

Trims include the SE, Executive Edition, Luxury, Advance, Sport, F Sport and Premier.

What features does the Lexus IS have?

Inside, the IS might look oddly familiar to someone who's clued up on their cars – that’s because it takes inspiration from the LFA supercar that Lexus built in 2010. This can be seen in its angular cabin design and sporty edge. 

All versions come with sat-nav as standard as well as a six-speaker sound system, cruise control, keyless entry, dual climate control and smartphone connectivity options. 

The IS can comfortably seat four people, with impressive amounts of space for a car of its size. The boot offers 480 litres of space, but it should be remembered that you lose 30 litres of that if you opt for the hybrid because of the extra batteries. 

Is the Lexus IS reliable?

Like all Toyota and Lexus models, you can depend on their reliability, and they rank very highly among recognised consumer surveys.  

Thanks to the many parts it shares across the Lexus range, its excellent build quality and Prius-adopted hybrid system, there’s no reason why the IS can’t be entirely dependable. 

The same goes for safety, with the IS scoring a full five stars following its Euro NCAP crash testing. This is thanks to its durable nature and onboard safety features such as adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist capabilities. 

All Lexus models come with a three-year/60,000-mile warranty from the factory to make sure everything goes smoothly.

How much does the Lexus IS cost to run?

For those wanting an IS, there are two engine options on offer. 

The most sensible is found in the IS 300h hybrid that Lexus claims will return 67mpg, which is superb and the best option for those who drive more around cities and towns because it can drive in electric-only mode to save on fuel. 

However, if you fancy something with a little more oomph, then we would suggest checking out the IS 200t that's powered by a turbocharged V6 engine. This is the better choice for those wanting a little more power from their executive saloon. 

There is also a spicier variant on offer called the IS F, which is very rare and is powered by the same 5.0-litre V8 you’d find in the new IS 500 F Sport that isn’t available in the UK.  

Who is the Lexus IS suitable for?

For many, the IS is a special car because it offers a lot of fun at a great price point. Whether you enjoy driving or just need a sensible hybrid daily driver, an IS is good for you.

The IS is Japan’s answer to the BMW 3 Series, which is its main rival, but it also competes with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Infiniti Q50.
