The i40 first came out in 2012 as a compact saloon to take on the likes of the Volkswagen Jetta and Kia Optima. It offers plenty of interior space for its overall size and high levels of comfort for all five passengers.  

While it is available as a saloon most of the time, Hyundai also made the i40 Tourer, which is an estate version with more bootspace thanks to its higher roofline and longer body.  

There are two diesel engines on offer, one offering 141hp and the other 115hp. Both are fantastic engines in their own right but will suit different people depending on what you’re after.  

There’s also a choice of trims, including the S, SE Nav, SE Nav Business and Premium, and you’ll benefit from the reliable and high-quality Hyundai reputation.

What features does the Hyundai i40 have?

Inside, a used i40 offers exactly what you’d want and expect from a family saloon – even entry-level models come equipped with a leather steering wheel and fancy ambient lighting.   

All models come as standard with a seven-inch touchscreen, with higher spec models offering sat-nav as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.  

They also come as standard with USB inputs and Bluetooth connectivity, and some options come with a DAB digital radio.   

The luxury Premium trim gets extra features like heated rear seats and a panoramic sunroof.  

Moving past the cabin, the i40 offers plenty of space in both the front and rear for its occupants. This isn’t a massive car so don’t expect SUV-like space, but it still isn’t all that bad for a car of this size – especially the i40 Tourer, which offers 553 litres of boot space.

What's the Hyundai i40 like to drive?

All i40s come with a 1.7-litre diesel engine, producing either 115hp or 141hp. The former is best suited for everyday, casual driving, whereas the larger 141hp variant is the best option for longer motorway journeys.   

Hyundai says these engines will return 65.7mpg and 67.3mpg respectively, which is very impressive for a small saloon, and is helped by the efficient diesel engines across the range.   

There are also options for automatic i40 models or manuals, depending on which you’d prefer. Each gearbox feels smooth on the roads, and works perfectly alongside each engine choice.
