ST – or ‘Sports Technologies’ – is the name given to Ford’s fast performance models, and while there may not be a specific Kuga ST model (never say never!), this family SUV still gets the sporty makeover.
There are two parts to this trim level – the addition of X Edition means you get one step above the standard ST-Line, bringing with it even more equipment and some seriously fancy car tech.
For a while, you had to buy one of these high-spec models to get the plug-in hybrid option, so although while it may sound counterintuitive, these could actually be some of the most affordable plug-in hybrids in the Kuga range when you’re looking at buying new, simply because there’s the possibility to find older examples.

The highlights of the ST-Line X Edition range are the plug-in hybrids. Both come with a 2.5-litre petrol engine, and you have the option of a 190hp regular hybrid or a 225hp plug-in hybrid, which could do around 20-40 miles between charges.
There’s also a 150hp 1.5-litre petrol engine, which is considerably more affordable and is an excellent choice for town drivers.
Some older models also came with an economical 120hp 1.5-litre diesel and a punchier 2.0-litre diesel, with 150hp or 190hp, and optional four-wheel drive, making it a great tow car.
Apart from a few special editions, this is about as extreme as you can get in the Kuga range, so you get a lot of equipment, beginning with LED headlights, a powered boot lid, an opening panoramic sunroof, all-round parking sensors and a reversing camera.
Other kit includes keyless entry and start, cruise control, front and rear heated seats, a heated steering wheel and sporty interior and exterior styling, featuring a rear spoiler.
Car tech comes in the form of a large digital display behind the steering wheel and another for the touchscreen infotainment system, which is incredibly slick and easy to use, and works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Ford Kuga ST-Line X Edition is a really high-spec model, and sits above the already well-equipped and also very appealing ST-Line Edition. These two have also been available without the ‘Edition’ in the name, and they’re very similar.
You can also pick from Titanium (Edition) cars, which are an excellent middle-ground, or cheaper Zetec models.
Apart from a few limited-run Kugas, like the Black Package Edition and the Graphite Tech Edition, your only other option on the third-generation 2019-onward Kuga would be the very premium Vignale spec.
