Start nowBMW’s M division is known for making some of the most engaging performance models, such as the M3, but while they’re fun to drive, they can be expensive to run.
The BMW 1 Series M Sport borrows this eye-catching styling but applies it to more regular models, which means the 1 Series M Sport is available with a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines.
M Sport is a popular trim level across the range, so you’ll have no problem finding a BMW 1 Series M Sport that suits your wants and needs.
These days, BMW only sells 1 Series M Sport models with a 1.5-litre engine – the 136hp ‘118i’ petrol or the 116hp ‘116d’ diesel.
If you’re willing to consider older models, there are 2.0-litre diesels with 150hp (118d) or 190hp (120d), as well as 184hp 2.0-litre petrols.
Some of the higher-output engines have been available with four-wheel-drive as an optional extra, and there are even quicker variants available in the form of the 128ti and M135i, though these don’t belong to the 1 Series M Sport trim.
There have been three generations of the BMW 1 Series since it launched in 2004, and each has been available with M Sport trim, so standard kit varies.
As a rule of thumb, new third-generation models come with part-faux leather upholstery, a large infotainment display and another behind the wheel, and all-round parking sensors.
There are plenty of optional extras to look out for, too, including a reversing camera, adaptive LED headlights, and even the ability to lock and unlock your car via your compatible smartphone (look out for the Comfort pack if that sounds up your street).
BMW’s trim levels have been pretty easy to follow and consistent over the years, so regardless of which generation you’re looking at, the 1 Series M Sport is generally the top level.
Beneath that is Sport, which sits one step above entry-level SE. On the whole, Sport models come with nearly as much kit as M Sport, but without the added style.
Occasional special editions have been made available, including a high-spec M Sport Shadow Edition, and there are also high-performance models that break free of the trim level naming convention, such as the 128ti and M135i.
The BMW 1 Series M Sport includes features like sporty exterior styling, M Sport suspension, M aerodynamics, sports leather seats, an M Sport steering wheel, LED headlights and an iDrive infotainment system.
Trims for the BMW 1 Series M Sport include M135i, M140i and M Sport Edition. Each feature varying performance, design and technology upgrades while maintaining the M Sport aesthetic and handling characteristics.
The BMW 1 Series M Sport offers enhanced performance over the standard 1 Series, featuring sport-tuned suspension, a more powerful engine and performance-oriented design elements.
The BMW 1 Series M Sport accelerates from 0-62 mph in around 6.8 seconds, depending on the specific model and engine configuration.
The BMW 1 Series M Sport is available with both an automatic and manual gearbox to suit your lifestyle. The automatic is faster but the manual is more engaging.
