The Giulia was a big moment for Alfa Romeo because it kickstarted the brand’s new direction as a deliverer of rear-wheel-drive, techy and gripping sports cars.  

It’s a direct competitor to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, and was developed using a 3.0-litre Ferrari engine, designed to make compact family driving as much fun as possible, with real heart and feeling.   

The Giulia is gorgeous to look at, with an eye-catching shield grille, slim lights and sleek curves and it has more sparkle than the austere German rivals. There’s a brilliant choice of engines and trims, and it’s quite reasonably priced too. 

Is the Alfa Romeo Giulia reliable?

The Alfa Romeo Giulia has finished very high in reliability surveys over the years, and it comes with the standard three-year/60,000-mile warranty.  

It’s packed with safety features – all models come with lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and autonomous emergency braking.  

Add the driver assistance pack to get blind spot warning, lane keep assist, drowsy driver detection, intelligent speed control, traffic jam assist and highway assist.  

It scored the full five marks from safety organisation Euro NCAP, and chalked up a mega 98% in adult occupancy (the highest mark achieved by any car at the time).   

What are the Alfa Romeo Giulia features?

The interior is sportier than many saloons, featuring large dials and a racing-style steering wheel, so it could be the one for you if you're after more flair.  

In newer versions, you get an eight-inch infotainment screen, and the driver also has a snazzy seven-inch digital dial setup.  

If you like BMW interiors, you’ll like the Giulia’s because they have a similar chrome and angular vibe. If you opt for the twin sunroofs, you'll get extra light into the cabin and a cooling breeze on a hot day.  

You get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and USB ports and music lovers will enjoy the 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.  

Although some materials aren’t quite of the same quality as very premium rivals, you'll still find rotary controls and leather-covered gear levers.   

When it comes to driver assists, adaptive speed and lane-sensing cruise control are just two parts of the onboard tech that keep you safe.  

The boot is surprisingly practical, measuring 480 litres. 

What's the Alfa Romeo Giulia like to drive?

On the road is where the Alfa Romeo Giulia will really shine.  

Every trip is a fantastic experience – it’s light, agile and the steering is accurate and responsive.  

You can select the driving mode too – we’d recommend flipping into Dynamic for extra thrills. It’s truly one of the best saloon drives you can find, and will keep you smiling long after you’ve hopped out of the car.  

Engine choice includes a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol in the GTA model, which has been described as a ‘jewel of an engine’ – and it’s not surprising, because this thing is QUICK.  

There are also another two 2.0-litre plus turbodiesels, and you can count on 0-62mph in less than six seconds for all engines. If you want power and fuel efficiency then opt for diesel, which is also best for motorway cruising.
