Suzuki Jimny front three quarters

The Suzuki Jimny is a highly popular car for many reasons. Aside from its superb off-road credentials, its Kei car ('light vehicle' in Japanese) size and affordability, it's one of the most enjoyable cars to bumble around in.

However, you can’t buy them new in the UK anymore (at least not if you want a non-commercial one), and used examples are becoming harder to find.

With that in mind, here are some of the best cars similar to a Suzuki Jimny we think you should consider.

Fiat Panda 4x4

An often-overlooked baby in the off-road world,, the Fiat Panda 4x4 has dominated many European landscapes for decades with its outstanding abilities, helped not least by its very light weight.

While it's no longer available new (it's been replaced by the two-wheel-drive Fiat Grande Panda), the older model's values are broadly the same as the Jimny's – value for money, a light weight and a boxy shape.

It's also smaller than the Jimny, being based on a hatchback, but that means it’s often easier to live with.

Jeep Renegade

Jeep Renegade exteriorWhen you think of an off-road car, your mind probably goes straight to Jeep, and why wouldn't it? They have a successful track record with the Wrangler, but what about the little Renegade?

Not all Renegades are suitable for going off the beaten track because they come as standard with front-wheel drive, but certain trims like Trailhawk get four-wheel drive.

It’s similarly sized to the Jimny but offers its Jeep pedigree. It's no longer available new, but we think it's more similar to the Jimmy than the newer and smaller Jeep Avenger.

Many buyers don't even buy a Jimny for its ruggedness or off-road ability; they just like its ultra-compact dimensions inspired by Japan's Kei cars.

And that's exactly when the Honda Super-N is – an ultra-compact hatchback perfect for towns and cities.

It's got a lot going for it – an electric range of up to 128 miles (or 199 miles in the city at slower speeds), a Boost mode with extra power and simulated gears, and an insanely practical cabin with Honda's Magic Seats, which fold up cinema-style to help you carry more behind the front seats.

Dacia Duster

Dacia Duster off-roadingIf budget motoring is at the forefront of your mind, then you can’t do much better than a Dacia Duster. It's still one of the cheapest crossovers you can buy, but when you add four-wheel drive to the list, its value really shines.

This clever four-wheel drive system gets you better traction, more confidence and more underbody protection against any rocks.

If anyone is heavily considering a Jimny but can’t find one they like, a Duster will do the job tenfold. Various generations have been available with petrol, diesel, and more recently hybrid power.

Suzuki Vitara

Suzuki Vitara front three quartersIf you're loyal to the brand and want an SUV, then why not consider a Vitara? It's affordable and comes with a 4x4 option.

You also get a higher driving position, a better view of the road ahead and therefore strong off-roading credentials, but it's bigger, so there's more space for the family and your luggage.

Over the years, it's been available with petrol, mild hybrid and self-charging hybrid powertrains, plus the newer all-electric eVitara.

A relative newcomer to UK roads, the JAECOO 5 and electric JAECOO E5 have proven to be a hit with buyers who want something affordable but don't want to sacrifice equipment levels.

Importantly, it's a boxy SUV just like the Jimny – that upright grille won't take any mistaking in a rear-view mirror.

While it isn't available with four-wheel drive, most drivers will rarely venture off the tarmac anyway. Plus, two-wheel drive is cheaper to run and cheaper to maintain.

BYD ATTO 2

Blue SUV driving on a rural road with grassy landscape, overcast sky. Vehicle has modern design and visible license plate, "LA26 MTJ."

We love the BYD ATTO 2 because you get all the creature comforts of a larger BYD model plus the brand's durable and long-lasting Blade Battery tech, but in a smaller and more affordable package.

Take your pick between a plug-in hybrid (with up to 55 miles of electric range and 621 miles of combined range) or an electric model with 267 miles of range.

If you wanted a Jimny to take camping, the ATTO 2 is a perfect replacement, because vehicle-to-load (V2L) lets you power portable appliances from the car's high-voltage battery. Because an air fryer is a camping essential, isn't it?
