The BMW X5 vs. X7 debate is a common one for those after a flashy SUV.
Both models offer luxury, performance and practicality, but they cater to different needs.
The X5 is a midsize SUV with sporty handling, while the X7 is a larger SUV built for maximum comfort and space.
We’re comparing their styling, driving experience, technology, reliability and dimensions to help you decide which one suits you best.
Take a look at our BMW X5 vs. X7 review below.

Our guide will answer:
Is the BMW X5 or X7 better to drive?
Does the BMW X5 or X7 have better tech?
Which car has better styling?
Is the BMW X5 or X7 more reliable?
What are the BMW X5 vs. X7 dimensions?
BMW X5 vs. X7: styling
The BMW X5 has a sleek, sporty design with a bold kidney grille that feels very BMW, plenty of sharp lines, and an overall aggressive look.
Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, said: “The X5 looks seriously classy and will be right at home in the golf club or executive car park”.
The X7 is larger and more imposing, with a grander front grille. We think this gives it a more luxurious presence.
If you prefer a more compact and athletic look, the X5 is the better choice, while the X7 is ideal for those who want a more commanding road presence.
BMW X5 vs. X7: what are they like to drive?
The X5 offers a more engaging driving experience with its agile handling and responsive steering. It feels lighter and more dynamic on the road.
The range-topping engine is the show-stopper, getting 530hp from the twin-turbo V8 M60i set-up – and it has mild-hybrid tech.
The X7, being larger, prioritises comfort over sportiness, offering a smoother ride with excellent suspension.
All the X7 engines come with 48V mild-hybrid tech, and there’s still an M60i xDrive model with 530hp and the 4.4-litre V8 engine.
If you want a fun-to-drive SUV, the X5 is the winner, but if comfort is your priority, the X7 takes the lead – though it’s still spicy when you put your foot down.
BMW X5 vs. X7: interior and technology
Both SUVs feature BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system, but the X7 offers more premium materials and additional luxury touches.
The X5 has a sleek cabin with top-quality finishes, but the X7 offers extra space and third-row seating, making it ideal for larger families and the largest SUV that BMW offers. So, it really depends what your priorities are.
Sam said: “Sitting in the X7 feels like travelling in first class – probably because you are.
“Some X7s even have a cut-glass gear lever, and you really can’t get much more luxurious than that.”
BMW X5 vs. X7: boot space and practicality
It doesn’t get much more practical than SUVs – if you ask UK motorists, anyway.
The X5 offers 650 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place, which is generous for a midsize SUV. It can extend to 1,870 litres if you fold the seats down.
The X7 has a 750-litre boot if you have the third row of seats folded, and that boosts to 2,120 litres with all the seats flat.
There’re still 326 litres at the rear if you’re using the X7 as a seven-seater, so not bad at all.
BMW X5 vs. X7: safety and reliability
Both models come with advanced safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking.
The X7 hasn’t yet been tested by Euro NCAP for safety, but the X5 has an expired five-star rating from 2018.
Both cars are considered reliable and well-built, but upkeep is likely to be more expensive because of the luxury nature of the car. That means you could be paying more for BMW-branded parts for repairs, as well as high-quality tyres for the mighty engines.
