Electric Car Grant: first cars with £3,750 discount

ECG full discount cars are here

Last updated: 10 September 2025

The first cars that are eligible for the government’s new Electric Car Grant have been announced, and it’s an impressive list.

This new grant is a discount that goes straight to the car manufacturer, giving buyers money off electric cars while the maker still gets the full price for the model.

Cars manufacturers apply to get the grant for are sorted into Band 1 (£3,750 off) or Band 2 (£1,500 off) based on things such as supply chain emissions.

See the full list of the cars eligible for the grant from August 2025 below.

Electric Car Grant eligibility

Cars are placed into Band 1 or Band 2 depending on a few factors.

Models that have the ‘cleanest’ manufacturing process with the least environmental impact are more likely to be placed into Band 1 and be eligible for the full grant.

Criteria the government take into account include:

  • Supply chain emissions

  • CO2 emissions from production

  • Use of renewable energy sources

How does the Electric Car Grant work?

Once cars are placed into a band based on their environmental impact, manufacturers will get the grant and use this to discount the price of the car.

This means that the manufacturer still gets full price for the vehicle, and the customer pays less. Win-win.

How do I claim the Electric Car Grant?

You don’t need to do anything to benefit from the Electric Car Grant. The manufacturer will apply for the grant and discount the car at retail level, so you just need to buy that meets the criteria to enjoy the discount.
