The Volvo XC90 is a luxury SUV that aims to take on the likes of the Audi Q7, Range Rover and Porsche Cayenne. This large Swedish vehicle offers the highest levels of safety, reliability, comfort and interior space, with that typical Volvo finish and quality touch.  

What's quite impressive when it comes to space is that all XC90 models come with seven seats, with the extra two rising from the boot floor at the rear. This makes it the best family car for road trips.  

Speaking of the interior, the seats are very comfortable, the cabin is very airy and the onboard technology is some of the best on the market, with everything being controlled from the vehicle’s portrait display in the centre console. 

You can choose from a range of options, including a choice of trims like the Momentum and R DESIGN models.  

What features does the Volvo XC90 have?

Inside, a used Volvo XC90 will bag you one of the best interiors in its class, and is minimalist yet jam-packed full of technology.   

Standard equipment across the range includes front and rear seat heating, auto-dimming mirrors, a DAB radio, and two USB ports. Sitting in the centre of the dashboard is a nine-inch portrait display that gives you access to a range of apps through Volvo’s infotainment system. 

On top of this, some optional extras available on the XC90 include a panoramic sunroof and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.  

But if that’s not enough for you, then Volvo also offers a whopping 1,400W Bowers and Wilkins speaker system that again, might be one of the best in its class.  

As you move to the back of the XC90, all models come with a hands-free power tailgate that leads to 1,007 litres of boot space that grows to 1,856 litres with the second row of seats down, and shrinks to a very impressive 356 litres with all three rows up.

What's the Volvo XC90 like to drive?

You can get a used Volvo XC90 with a choice of engines, which include petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options.  

If you’re looking for the best all-rounder, we would suggest you check out the B5 diesel unit that's mated to a 48v mild-hybrid system. This is a very smooth engine that's perfect for towing a trailer or caravan, and Volvo claims it returns up to 44mpg.  

Moving up the range, you get the 2.0-litre T5 and T6 engines that pack a bigger punch than the diesel under acceleration, but it won’t be as good as the B5 on longer journeys with regard to fuel economy.  

Sitting at the top of the range is the plug-in hybrid T8 engine. This is a 2.0-litre petrol engine that's connected to both a turbocharger and a supercharger, producing a combined 390hp and a claimed fuel economy of around 80mpg.  

Being a hybrid, this engine is capable of travelling up to 29 miles in all-electric mode, which is ideal for most people’s daily work commutes.
