What is the Volkswagen Golf GTI?

The Volkswagen Golf GTI has been around since the first-generation Volkswagen Golf (or Rabbit, as it was also known). 

It acts as a sportier, lightweight version of the standard Golf with the ‘GTI’ badge standing for ‘Grand Touring Injection’, which has also been used in many other car names over the years. 

With eight generations in existence, it’s hard to choose the best, but you can’t go wrong with the most recent version.

What are the Volkswagen Golf GTI specs?

The Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 238hp and 370Nm of torque in its standard form. 

Up it to the GTI Performance or GTI Clubsport, however, and you can benefit from more power and improved brakes. 

Despite being a performance hot hatch, fuel economy figures are strong, with the GTI getting a claimed 52.3mpg.

The GTI is very well-equipped from the factory, with all the bells and whistles you’d find on a top spec ‘standard’ Golf. 

This includes features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a large infotainment touchscreen, A/C and a well-sized boot. 

You do get some extras, however, such as a golf ball-style manual gearbox knob, optional tartan fabric seats, a ‘GTI’ badge on the flat-bottomed steering wheel and red accents throughout to remind you that you’re in a performance car. 

Where the Golf GTI sits in the Volkswagen range

The GTI sits underneath the R in the model lineup but above the Life and Style. This means it sits well in the middle of the range, offering a sporty front-wheel-drive experience that’s arguably more fun than the four-wheel-drive ‘R’. 

It rivals cars such as the Hyundai i30N, Audi S3 and Ford Focus ST.
