What is the Volkswagen Golf GTD?

If you see the GTD badge on your Volkswagen, it means it’s a diesel, with ‘GT’ standing for ‘Gran Turismo’ and ‘D’ standing for ‘Diesel’. 

The Golf GTD has been around since 1976 when it was launched with the MK1 Golf (four months after the petrol).  

Compared to the GTI, the Golf GTD is less powerful but more frugal on fuel, which is a trade-off many are willing to make.

What are the Volkswagen Golf GTD specs?

The Volkswagen Golf GTD is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 200hp and 400Nm of torque. 

When it comes to driving, the Golf GTD is much like the petrol version in that it’s smooth, comfortable and easy to drive. 

It’s economical too, with a claimed 62.8mpg rating, beating the petrol Golf by more than 20mpg.

Inside, the VW Golf GTD is identical to every other Golf hatchback, with an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, cruise control, wireless phone charging and an inbuilt sat-nav.
